Laptop Memory upgrade.

I need to buy some of this memory
for my Dell Inspiron 8600. The laptop currently has 2 256mb sticks. Should I buy 1 GB and keep one 256mb stick for a total of 1.25 GB?
Will that old stick decrease the performance of the extra 1GB?

Also my impression is that DDR prices should go up in the future because they are no longer making DDR. Is that the case for laptop DDR as well?

Maybe I should just go with 2GB now before the prices go up?

*Edit* By the way I use this laptop for business purposes, word processing, accounting software, photoshop for pictures and editing, Web programming, internet, and very light gaming. I often have the need to have several applications open at once, and it really slows me down.

If you don't have to run them in Dual Channel, you'll be fine by adding 1GB module.

If you do, killing Dual Channel is a less of a performance "decreaser", compared to more System RAM - overall performance will only increase with more RAM.

Or... just get 2x1GB modules like I did - but I am running Vista Home Premium on my HP laptop.

I'm pretty sure my laptop does not support dual channel.
I was thinking of getting 1 GB now and another down the road.
Do you know if the price of laptop DDR is supposed to go up?

I would just look for specials at Staples or any other retailer.

I got my DDR 3200/2700 1GB module at OfficeMax for ~$50, and DDR 2700 1GB at Staples for ~$55.

Otherwise it might be getting more and more expensive, since it is an obsolete technology.

BTW, I ran 1.25GB on an ACER laptop with no issues at all.

I havent seen prices like that anywhere at all, they're usually double what you're quoting..

But you never said if you are looking for the DDR or DDR2 - I am assuming DDR 333/PC 2700 SO-DIMM.
