Tax return came in .. got everything back.. sweet!

I'm thinking about getting a laptop or HDTV

I'd probably get an Apple ibook for a laptop $1200

or

a Panansonic 47" for an HDTV $1200

But not sure which.

What would you get if you had an extra G ?

No travel, but I'm in school.

Laptop would come in handy there, plus at work where I sit around and do nothing (read newspapers, watch TV, use ancient crappy computer there)

dude, you'll need to spend about ~500 more on the television for ISF calibration

you'd be an idiot to buy that television w/o calibration.

Hey guy I was in the same delema as you 6 months ago and I decided on the laptop.
Here is why.
Laptops are way cheaper then they used to be, here is an example: best buy had a sale last week on a 1.7celeron, with 256mb ddr, 30 gig hard drive,14.1 inch screen,dvd/cd burned drive, and everything else like 10/100 nic , 56k modem and lots of ports and stuff for check this out $900.00 Dollars!!! and there was a 100 dollar rebate too, so total after rebate was 850.00 with tax and all, that is a nice laptop for the money.

Most HDTV's are not true HD, they are like 700 or 800 line of resolution and then they down grade the signal to fit on the screen, to get one that is 1080 line of res will cost a minimun of $2500.00, not to mention that HD standard is still many years away and in a year or 2 you will beable to get a 60 inch true HDTV for like 1500.00 or less dollars.

I guarentee that one you could get for 1200.00 is not true HD, It may say that it is , but you have to read the fine print.

Notebook, but don't buy an Apple, take advantage of the "prices dropping like a rock" Windows based notebooks & set up a wireless network with more of the "prices dropping like a rock" components so you can surf from the toilet

Put the rest of the $ away, cuz you'll easily spent $1K more than budgeted when you buy the TV.

That only runs about $600 where I live, so you'd still have enough $ to buy a clearanced notebook from Staples

I'll have to say laptop, the 12" iBook isn't a powerhouse but it's very well built and VERY portable.

If you could afford another $600 get the new 12" PowerBook

Since you can't make the decision yourself, I'll vote that you should donate it to a good charity case... like me!

ISF calibration is not NEEDED for that HDTV.
It can look very good by tweaking it yourself using AVIA,

I don't know of any good, cheap projectors that don't require almost darkness.

I would get a Windows laptop, but don't know of any comparable size/weight wize to the ibook and
with the same battery life. (Ibook runs over 5 hours surfing web/Office apps ... 3.5 hours watching DVD's)

720 lines IS true HDTV. There are two HD standards, 720p and 1080i. You are thinking of EDTVs that only do 480p. It's not hard to find an HDTV for 1400 or so but you will need to get a decoder also.

Yep, Don't listen to this guy. 1 post and his first post is full of BS. 720p/1080i ARE the standards for HDTV resolution. I think what he is talking about is the fact that some TV's do not display a 720p resolution. They UPCONVERT the image to 1080i. Either way the picture quality is going to be great.

The "REAL" problem with HDTV is the fact that most units in that price range do NOT have a built in HD decoder unit. So you're going to have to end up purchasing a decoder (either an OTA -over the air, or DirecTV unit that has built in OTA). Thats where they'll get you for another $499-899 and so on. Depends on what you purchase.

Additionally I don't think you'll be able to buy an HDTV 60" for $1500 in the next two years.

I know I'll need to get a converter if I get a HDTV, but I probaly wont get one right away.

I'd just get a OTA one, don't have Direct TV .. should be a little over $300

I think I'm leaning for the HDTV right now, since I'll be getting it for $400 less than retail..
