Hi everyone,

I've built servers/pc for about 15yrs, used both AMD & Intel, so no preference.

Currently I'm using only A64 & Opterons for future 64bit OS's..

Which is the best processor to have in a laptop right now, I'm trying to set a $1500-1800 budget.

I want to have nvidia onboard video & about 2 gigs of ram.

Also wouldn't a 5400rpm hd be preferable ? 80gigs at least.
I'd use an external usb hd for addl. storage.

I'd also want to dual boot WinXp & RH Linux on this laptop.

Any advice is appreciated.

Regards,
Jose

Right now, it doesnt make sense to get anything BUT an Intel Core Duo. The Core Duo Yanoah chips are excellent mobile chips that will do very well in a laptop.
Rest is just up to your budget. You can get a fairly nice laptop for around your budget price. just be sure its got intel inside .. (the core duo that is)

Core Duo seems to be the best right now. And w/ that budget forget about the 5400rpm drive; go w/ a 7200rpm and you'll be happier.

i was considering waiting for merom myself... but the wait probably wouldnt be worth it considering i wouldnt have a laptop the whole time! ontop of that, the core duos are still very nice and very fast and do everything i really need. How big of a laptop do you want? I ask because if you want a 15.4" or 17", you can get a highly decked out system from dell for roughly $1250 to $1300... For $1400 ish, you can get a decked out (better specs than Dell's 15.4") 15.4" laptop from Acer aswell.

Core 2 Duo is supposed to be more efficient in performance and power at a given clock speed - I've heard Intel say that you can get a 20% faster processor at the same power level (i.e. a slightly higher-clocked chip). It'll also be the first Intel mobile chip to support x64 code, though this won't matter to anyone but a few professionals for a long time.
