Laptop randomly runs slllllllllllooooooowllly

Here are my specs:

Dell Inspiron 700M
1.8 ghz Centrino
1 gb 256 mb memory
80 gb 5400 hard drive
Windows XP Home
Running it off the ac adaptor

My problem is sometimes I turn on my laptop and Windows XP will start to boot up just really slowly or it will turn on and turn off really quickly.

When it does boot up, it takes about ten minutes to boot up and then every program (from Instant Messenger to Microsoft Office, or any other program) runs at the speed a 486 would run it at. Maybe even slower.

It's completely random when it does this. It usually happens once every two days and I turn my laptop on and off about 6 times a day. If it does this I can just turn it off and turn it back on and it will usually boot up fine.

I ran an virus and spyware scan on it a couple days ago and they both turned up nothing. I just updated to the latest BIOS, so I'm not sure if that's going to fix it at all.

When it boots up fine it runs amazing. Right now, I'm using it and having no hassles.

Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to be thorough.

Any ideas about what could be wrong with the laptop? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I have 1.25 gbs of memory. I'm not really sure what processes take up the max CPU time because i usually reboot the machine before Windows finishes loading because it has taken so long.

Sounds spyware related to me or a hardware failure. Run hijackthis and post it here for us to read. Does safe mode boot this slowly too?

Safemode has run this slowly before, but when I did the spyware scan a couple days ago in safe mode, nothing came up. I'll post my hijackthis results after I get back from class today.
