Laptop - Sending International (Europe) Help.

Hey guys,

A family friend of mine from the UK would like me to purchase a laptop for him here in the US. (since we tend to get things a bit earlier & cheaper). His reqs for the laptop arent extreme, but I have some questions in terms of compatibility.

I know that the UK has the 220V standard as opposed to our 110V. Would a standard power convertor (that you can get at BB or CC) suffice or would you need a special adaptor for the laptop?

Also, do they have the same wireless network system there, so if I get him a Centrino laptop with 802.11b/g, he can use it there (otherwise it's not worth the money).

If anyone knows any other considerations I should be making...please let me know and advise. Thanks in advance.

Most laptops have AC powersupplies working on 110-240 V. You either need an adapter plug or another cable at one end of the adapter (same system as most desktops).

802.11b/g are international standard, they are the same in US and Europe (for me that includes UK).

well, to be absolutely correct, the wi-fi will work in Europe (obviously it will work anywhere), but it may not be technically legal. The number of channels are defined differently in Europe and the US, but I don't see who would check or object. I use my US-purchased wi-fi setup in Europe and naturally havent had any problem so far ...

Hmm most wireless nic driver software I've seen has the ability to adjust for the user's location, as to keep within specs of their regulatory domains.
