Can anyone confirm that Catia really dosen't need a fireGL or Quadro gfx card? I was gonna get an m20 or m70 out of dell outlet, but now they are hardly ever in stock and if they are, expensive.

still looking around for the perfect lappy that dosen't cost more than 1500

Make sure your going to the outlet and then choosing dell business. There are two m70s on there now with quadro fx go 1400s going for $1205. Not a bad price for what you get.

I'm not going to comment much on cpu/HD/memory specs cuz I think that everything else you really need to know has been said (in a nutshell.... just make the cpu big, get at least a gig of ram and make sure you have a good vid card). but having used AutoCAD for years now with school and less so in work, I can tell you first and foremost, one of the other most important things to make sure not to skimp on is the size of the screen you buy on your laptop. before entering grad school this fall i bought myself the Asus z71v not for this reason, but it was definately a selling point. The res is 1680x1050 and in a CAD or any sort of 3d modeling/drafting/photoshop application it is simple to say that screen real estate is key. the bigger the better and there's no arguing about that one. get him something widescreen.

If you're going Dell, I know a bunch of friends with their 9300s and its 17 in. widescreen and they are all very happy with it, it is actually a nice laptop for our uses and I would say is very similar to mine (unfortunately the 17 in part of it makes it a bit larger than I would really like though). My Asus is wonderful..... no complaints at all here (and btw, the graphics module is not upgradeable, not that its impossible but asus hasnt' and most likely wont upgrade it).

when it comes to quadro or anything else I have honestly not seen any real difference. having taken projects of my own from my sans-quadro comp to another with it I couldn't care less as to which I run it on just because many of them either equally ran fine or equally ran like ass. my best advise would just be to save your money and spend it on other upgrades which would probably be more beneficial (cpu/ram/HD or something with better video)

Wow are you sure that applies to all CAD programs? Catia seems pretty demanding to be running on some intel extreme...
But if it works, I'm not complaining

Honestly, I will say that I have never used Catia, but I do use AutoCAD as i said and do have a bunch of experience with 3D Studio MAX/VIZ. You may just want to check out the Catia message boards to find out that exact answer as to if it is really worth the additional costs. Unfortunately, whenever running these type of programs though it never seems that you have a comp which is fast enough, but that's technology.

In the end, I'm sure that it will work.... but I for one can't seem to quite personally justify the extra cost.

I have the M70 and it's an awesome piece of equipment. I love it.

I'd check out e-bay for a clearance machine from IBM. A quick search using the phrase "IBM T42p" turned this up:

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkPad-T41p-1...40QQcategoryZ80211QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

IBM T41p
1.7GHz Pentium M
2gb ram
60gb HDD @ 7200rpm
14" 1400x1050 LCD
CD-RW/DVD drive
9 cell battery
128mb ATI FireGL T2
802.11b wireless
Bluetooth
Gb Ethernet
4 year IBM warranty
4.5 lbs

Personally if I was buying a machine to run CAD, on your budget, that's definitely the machine I would buy - no question about it...

CATIA won't (at least, in my experience) run very well on Intel's integrated graphics. When I hover the mouse over an item in the specification tree I get an orange box instead of orange highlighting of the text I just hovered over. I haven't really tried doing much with it, but the behaviour I described is telling of some sort of visualization problem. It is very disk intensive though (when loading and updating) so I'd go for a fast hard disk and at least 1GB of RAM. I think the question of how high-end a video card your dad needs will be dictated by what workbenches he uses. I can't imagine Sketcher/Part Design being very taxing but working with complex assemblies and surfaces might require a very powerful video card.
