I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there are any laptops out there right now that have the new ATI and nVidia mobile cards in them? I am in search of a laptop and I know that I want good graphics performance so I am trying to find a company that uses the cards or will use them in the near future. Thanks.

Looks in the specifications for the "Geforce Go" phrase. That is the video chipset you want in your laptop.

I believe Toshiba is. I read a review of a laptop of theirs which has the new Nvidia card in.

Well, we shall see. I've heard that the Geforce Go eats power, at least compared to the Radeon mobility. However, I so far have no definite confirmation of this. 3D is nice for a laptop, but still for most (but not all) people it's of secondary concern versus battery conservation.

Yes 've heard that Toshiba is doign something, but haven't been able to find anything on the Toshiba web page. I too have heard that the GeForce Go is going to eat power, but any idea in comparreson to the Readon Mobility. I hate to go with ATI(the have such great drivers) but will if I have to in order to prolong that battery life.

Yes, that's right it will consume more battery life. However this is what you can expect. You would be best off using your laptop with the mains adapter for 3D apps. I would wait to see what Dell has on offer. I still reckon Dell makes top notch laptops.

Yeah, I agree, except for the part that one should expect improvements in speed to necessitate increased battery usage. Ideally, the chip should be redesigned to best conserve battery power. That's one reason why you can't just take a CPU from a desktop and stick it in a laptop.

Yeah, I would wait too. Just a note though that with Dell, many of their laptops are not made by them. It's the no-name brand companies that actually make them, so no-name brand laptops can be just as good - it's the same hardware afterall. With Dell what you're paying for is the name, and the very good warranty and pretty good support too. Dunno about Toshiba though.

You can put a desktop 1GHz Pentium III FC-PGA into a laptop. The only snag is the heat and the lower battery life. Intel will release a 1Ghz mobile Pentium III in around 5-7 weeks or so it seems. I believe the mobile versions run at 1.3V and not 1.7V.

Yeah that would be cool to have a 1 GHz laptop, but how much is that going to cost. Darna good 8oo MHz laptop would be the down pament on a car right now. I don't even want to think about the 1GHz price. I guess the only consolation is that the lower end laptops will have to come down in price.

With battery life it's a shame they don't try and do something about that. It's a shame that we've got huge processors we can slap in lap tops, but the batteries won't support them for very long. It's really too bad. Oh well such as life right?

So I guess in summary what we have found is that there nVidia will suck more juice, but other than toshiba we don't know of any company that is currently putting the cards in the machines. Right?

Correct. I should think this will soon change as many notebook makers release new models incorporating this chipset or the Radeon Mobilty from ATI.
