I would probably go this route because you really don't need more speed than this and the 15" tft is nice.

Weights? Small is always nice. Indeed, I'd rather have a lightweight laptop with 14" screen than a monster with 15" screen any day.

Also, it depends on what resolution the screen is. There is not much point in going 15" over the 14" if the resolution is the same.

this looked nice when I was at the store. is there a difference between 1.13 p3 and 1.6-1.7 p4?

Sony support is darn near non-existent, so if you do go with the Vaio I suggest keeping everything in a safe place. Otherwise reformatting will be a pain in the butt.

Depending on what you do...Apple's iBooks and PowerBooks are sweet -- best notebooks for their class IMO.

I agree.

And yes, I am ignoring the first post.

Avoid Toshiba,

They are currently subject to a class action lawsuit seeking damages for defective laptops and fraudlent efforts to conceal the said defects.

as quoted from the BBB

"We rate this company as having an unsatisfactory business performance record based on a pattern of unresolved and unanswered customer complaints. Complainants allege defective merchandise and failure to honor warranty claims. The company responds to some complaints by offering additional repairs, or explanations of warranty provisions. Some complaints remain unresolved, meaning the customer was not satisfied with the company's response. Many other complaints remain unanswered. The Better Business Bureau does not endorse, recommend or disapprove of any company, product or service."

They won't stand behind their product if something goes terribly wrong.

Something someone else said.

I have a Toshiba which has some of the problems mentioned above. The reviewers didn't spend enough time with it to find the problems. With mine, at least, if you run games or multimedia programs the machine overheats and shuts down.

Toshiba's solution:
1) Stonewall.
2) Tell the users not to run games and multimedia programs (on a laptop advertised as the 'ultimate multimedia laptop').
2) Put out a BIOS chip that throttles the 1.1Ghz processor down to 600 Mhz so it won't overheat.

The class action lawsuit won't do me much good (the lawyers will get millions and I'll get a $50 coupon on my next Toshiba laptop), but at least I'll hopefully see them pay.

Ranting aside, most of my friends who own their laptops have a Dell and like them. Most of my friends who have work laptops have an IBM and like them. Some of the Compaqs are also pretty nice.

If I could do it over again, I'd get a Dell."

My colleagues have Dell Inspiron 8100s. They are poorly built. I am totally unimpressed. They are relatively inexpensive, but it seems here that you get what you pay for.

Dunno about the 8100's, but I'm very satisfied with my 4150. I wouldn't get an 8x00 anyways, they're too big and heavy. (might as well be carrying my ATX tower... )

Go with an IBM if you want the absolute best quality & reliability, and a Dell if you want the best price/performance. Fujitsu is the only other one I'd look at, all the rest didn't impress me much.

BTW, a 15" TFT screen is a waste of money unless it has a higher resolution. Just get a laptop with a 14", it'll be smaller/lighter and have better battery life.

Yeah, the 8x00 series is for the "bigger is better" group, and I dare say some of that group is composed of people who don't have much experience with laptops.

They're too heavy, mediocrely made, but people buy them because of the relatively low price and good on-paper specs. If I were to get a Dell (which is unlikely since I prefer Mac laptops), I'd consider the smaller ones too though.

Yeah, the ones I've been considering for a friend are IBM and Fujitsu. However she won't consider Fujitsu because she doesn't know the name.
