laptop wont shut off with hdmi

my laptop is plugged into my asus monitor through hdmi and whenever i go to shut down it wont power off. The monitor goes blue and shuts down but the computers keyboard and fans are still running for aslong as 10 minutes before i went to hold the power button. I use to have it connected through a vga but changed to hdmi today. Its done it twice so far back to back. Anyone know a solution?

laptop- lenovo y500
gpu - nvidia gtx 700M
cpu- intell
os - windows 8

But it shuts down normally when the HDMI isn't hooked up?

Make sure your bios and drivers are updated.
I would disable startup items and see if that resolves the problem.

I am thinking the same as Paul.
