I have an Athlon 1.4 GHz laptop that I'm thinking about using. But would having my laptop on 24/7 be a good idea?

Naturally you would have it on a charger

Most people who I've heard say that they run a DC project on a laptop are OK ,but a few say they get very hot ,one person (I forget who) even said it charred his table top!:Q.
I guess it depends on how well cooled the rig is ,a 'suck it & see' scenario (keep a sharp eye on it for the 1st 1-2 hrs).
Unless of course someone else has already tried it with the same model?

What laptop have you got?

i have run several laptops 24/7 running DC clients for as long as six weeks straight (test lab at work) with no ill effects

they of course get hot, more than if you weren't running DC

there are a few DC clients that will turn themselves off when running on battery, if you prefer to have your battery last longer when unplugged

go for it!

I leave my laptop on 24/7 running whatever DC project I'm doing at the time.

I've got a Compaq. And I can't even lay it on my lap as it gets so hot!

If your going to run it 24/7 take the battery out. It's knacked my Ni-Mh battery by overcharging.

I've run Dell Lattitude laptops (PIII733 & PIII1ghz) 24x7 on RC5 and SETI with no ill effects at all.

Just make sure to keep an eye on the fan so it doesn't go out. We replaced almost all of the cooling fans in the CPxJ Lattitudes within 2 years (and most weren't running DC projects, or even on 24x7). They just had lousy cheapo fans. Out of 12 laptops, only one fried the MB because the person didn't notice the fan out, and kept using it. And they weren't running any DC projects.

I've warped a table top (oak dining room table) by leaving a laptop crunching SETI on it for two days....and this was just using an old Celeron 333! :Q

I'm almost too afraid to try SETI on my new 2.4GHz P4 laptop.....(well, I did fire it up for about an hour and the time for the 1st WU settled out to 2:34 :Q...so I'm very tempted to try it again! )

You know you want to

If that laptop has temp sensing then you could instal MBM5 & have it shutdown if it gets too hot

my dad has a compaq that was getting too hot from seti or eccp or whatever I tried to run on it
he has these pads he got on ebay though, that have 3 fans in them and have like 54cfm blowing on the bottom of the laptop
and I've seen pcmcia card slot fans in a vendor catalog at work

My company is a bit less generous as I have a Dell Lattitude notebook with a PII-366. But, I still run SETI on it 24/7! It is by far the slowest producer in my fleet, but I still want the 1.5 to 2 WUs per day it can produce.

I've got several laptops going 24/7 on SETI or DF and other than the additional heat they have no problems. Normally the laptops are in a docking station anyway so there's no worry about running down the battery because they've got power connected.

I've got 4 laptops in my office going 24/7 as well. Pretty cool because all they need is power & lan cables and they take up almost no space.

BTW - My Dell C610 (P3-1Ghz) laptops are faster at SETI than my Dell GX-240 (P4-1.8Ghz)! :Q

Jesus! ,I know the PIII's are more efficient but they shouldn't be able to catch a P4 1.8GHz!:Q

What WU times do you get with the PIII & P4 Robor?
What spec are the P4's ?(RAM,chipset etc)

I ran rc5 and others on my dell laptop with no ill effects. I had it on top of another computer case as it would make the tabletop very warm. Of course it was a leased dell that would be replaced if broken. I don't know if I would do that same if it was a new laptop that I bought.
