Large etailer SSD reliablity results

Found this on Toms, thought some of you might find it interesting. This is an online retailer that lists their return rates for SSDs. They update it multiple times each year, and it was last updated in November of last year. Results speak for themselves.

It would be interesting to see if the rate of return on SF drives have dropped since October, the release of the BSOD fix firmware.

That's exactly what I want to know. I expect it will be quite a bit better but not sure.

ocz has highest return rate period. go look at the open box/return section of any reseller and you'll see piles of that and none of intel

I think it has more to do with Intel's intimate knowledge of drivers. They make the CPUs, the chipsets and such, so they are able to tailor their SSD firmware to avoid the pitfalls of SSDs (timings, power management, etc.). SSDs don't fail because of the NAND.

I also think it's notable to look back one page at the HDD return rates. While OCZ's > 4% return rate on SSDs is definitely bad, the HDD manufacturers are all in that general ballpark -- certainly nowhere near the < 1% return rate that you see for Intel SSDs (that is just stellar, but see above...).

Note the return rates for WD Black HDDs. Makes me chuckle with how often they're recommended on the forums here.

WD blacks have a 5 yr warranty at least, so you're at least getting the fastest hdd with the best warranty (other than 10k obviously) at least.

Intel is more reliable than the others b/c of the validation that their ssd's are forced to endure. Frankly, I'm very surprised that OCZ's overall number is that low, only 4% really surpised me. Especially in light of the recent firmware updates, I might even recommend OCZ to some people in the future if there is a large enough price delta.

It's a limited sample. But even with these optimistic (probably generous) numbers, I wouldn't take a 1 in 20 chance that the drive I recommended would fail.
