I saw some news footage this evening on the 11 O'clock news...looks like they really took a beating this time.
I expect the death toll will rise quite a bit once they get the rubble cleaned up.
Hopefully it's not too bad.

Yahoo is now reporting that 65 deaths confirmed so far, many not accounted for! Also a group of students visiting from japan are trapped under the rouble and they are trying to rescue them but don't know how many are alive

Hopefully Australia and the US are going in for assistance...the damage this time around looks much worse.

I've been through a 8+ in Northern Japan and that was quite an experience. Luckily Japan is built for quakes for hundreds of years. Even the temples were built on rollers.

My thoughts and prayers are going out for the Kiwis tonight.

Aus has sent in crack search and rescue teams as well as search dogs

I just saw this on the news and came on to see if there was a thread going.

Glad to hear that the AT members are ok, but it's terrible to see the destruction in Christchurch.

Where's the flooding from? Just pipes or did they also get rain over the weekend?

Best wishes to those down there.

Was wondering the same thing? Levees or something? That's too much water to be from just broken pipes.

Saw the news and headed here first thing to make sure our annoying but beloved Kiwis were ok. Glad to see folks checking in unharmed. Terrible to see the destruction that has happened though.

I hope for the best for all those involved down there. Re: Godless - what are the odds that this story (saw the link on a page with info on the earthquake) is about Godless or his brother Mike? http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/mp/8880014/typical-kiwi-bloke-stabs-himself-with-bayonet/

Hmm, while I bet that could be the average ATOTer, I don't think GA or MG would do that

Totally this.

Another update: TVNZ has reported the death toll at 65.

They totally fucked up that death toll - the Prime Minister reported it live last night, then this morning they were trying to cover up the cock up of the night before. The death toll as of this morning is 38.

It sounds like they're not quite sure how many are dead yet...and I'm sure the numbers will keep changing.

"The official death toll from the Christchurch earthquake has now been confirmed as to 32"

"WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Office workers trapped under their collapsed buildings sent messages to the outside as rescuers with dogs scrambled to save them and dozens of others following a powerful earthquake that killed at least 65 in one of New Zealand's largest cities. At least 100 people were reportedly missing and believed buried. "

On the radio this morning, the death toll was at 38. Apparently 65 dead have been sighted, 38 have been identified.

This morning on the radio, someone called in about her 1 month old who died - the baby was crushed by the tv. So fucking sad.

If you can't see that all the banter is just for fun, you need to learn to read between the lines better.

Yes, it was raining there yesterday, but I don't think it would be causing flooding.

Was wondering the same thing? Levees or something? That's too much water to be from just broken pipes.

I have a feeling it may be combined from broken pipes and collapsed segments of levees.
I don't actually know, but I think there will be a fair bit coming up from underground along with the sand, as well as what is from pipes.

The toll stands at 55 bodies identified and 20 not identified yet. Reports of ~300 people missing but many of those may have left the city and not accounted for. There still seem to be people trapped in collapsed buildings.

As for the flooding, there has been extensive damage to water and sewage infrastructure and rain overnight, which would account for a some of it. Also I'd assume local waterways would be disrupted and add to it. No reports of tidal waves.
