Large Screen LCD suggestions

I'm looking at upgrading to a large LCD, widescreen. From everything I've read about the Samsung 244t, Samsung acknowledges that it has "input lag" when running it's full resolution. That is, it's DSP isn't capable of handling 1920x1200 of resolution instantly, and the result is a delay between the time your video card sends out a signal and the time the monitor displays it. People say this is the kiss of death for gamers. And that's all this PC is used for: games.

I've read very similar things about Dell's widescreen (and I'd hate to have a monitor that said "Dell" on it.)

How about Apple's 23" Cinema display? Are there any problems running it on a PC? Does it have a DVI connector or include an adapter? Does it game well?

Any other suggestions are welcome. Looking to stay under $1500.

Well, it's an IPS panel with 16 ms response time and 400:1 contrast ratio. It does have DVI and its responsiveness is quite OK for gaming but its black level won't be stellar, plus it's considerably slower than 6 ms g2g monitors like the Samsung 244t you mentioned (in terms of pixel response, not the infamous input lag).

For a dedicated gaming PC, I wouldn't get it... but it also depends heavily on what kind of games you play. If you're into fast FPS or racing games, it's not a great choice. Otherwise, 16 ms IPS displays are quite OK for games.

You may want to take a look at the new Philips 230WP7NS monitor. It's also an IPS display but with new generation panel which has improved contrast (i.e. also better blacks) and response time of 12 ms (based on specifications and press release, it's most likely 12 ms rise/fall time and 8 ms g2g).

Edit:
I've also been looking for a fast gaming black 23-24" wide monitor with good specs (colors, contrast, viewing angles, response time, input responsiveness) but I haven't found anything I would really be satisfied with. That's why I'm about to pull the trigger on ViewSonic P227fB and stay in the CRT world for a bit longer, probably until SED finally comes, or at least until convincing LCDs with sub 6 ms response time and 120 Hz come out.

Response time isn't really an issue for me. I've got a 16ms 17" NEC monitor, and I've never noticed any ghosting on it.

I'm more concerned with the input lag that I've read about concerning the Samsung and the Dell. Apparently their DSPs just can't keep up.

The Apple Cinema has been out for a while, boasts the same resolution, but I haven't heard any complaints about input lag.

Also, I can't find any reviews or info about the Phillips 230WP7NS you posted about.

One of my guildies in WoW runs the apple when I see her ill ask about input lag, I do know she swears by hers over the Dells.

It's nice that the Dell's are $600 less than the competition, but they seem to have way more QC issues than the other panels. Plus I couldn't stand to have people assuming that my PC is a Dell, because my monitor has a big silver Dell badge on it.

I work as a phlebotomist at a hospital and most of the monitors I see are Dell. They are good monitors, in fact they provide the most crisp imaging we can have to view micro3D samples of hemoglobin samples or basic metabolic panels. We also have several NEC monitors throughout the hospital, but here the Dells are better. Obviously they are used for much different purposes for gaming and what they can do here probably doesn't even matter. But, I also have a Dell 20" Widescreen and I find nothing wrong with it. I am interested in the new NEC monitor, but I kind of don't like the "no height adjustment" feature. I've played through F.E.A.R, BF2, Far Cry, HL2, and all of them look amazing. There is no lag or tunning that needs to be fixed. Granted, the newer monitors that continue to emerge hold better stats, but for the money per quality you get it is a good deal. I might put it a long side that new NEC though (just to have a dual monitor setup and to compare). They aren't NEARLY as bad as you make them out to be.

Here's how the 3007WFP's response time compares to the 20WMGX2: http://www.lesnumeriques.com/duels.php?...o1=95&p1=969&ma2=88&mo2=92&p2=946&ph=1

I don't know french, so that didn't do much for me.

I'd also entertain the idea of getting an LCD TV hooked up to DVI for watching movies\tv\games and keeping my current LCD on analog for my normal computer needs. Plus with an LCD TV I wouldn't have to continuously upgrade to the newest graphics card in order to run 1920x1200 on everything, since LCD TVs are like 1280x720, right?

Hi,

My 21" CRT died yesterday, and I'm looking for a replacement. My current top two potentials are the Philips 230WP7NS and the HP L2335. I use it primarily for web use, programming, and gaming. Can anyone make any recommendations? Thanks.

Depending on how far away you sit from your monitor, the LCD TV might not be a good idea. Most LCD TV's look like crap when your up close to them, but at a reasonable distance they do pretty good. As far as a computer LCD monitor goes I'm just starting to do more research, but I like a 20" widescreen NEC that my brother showed me. I'll have to reply back later with a link. It is expensive, but is awesome with its crazy contrast ratio.

I think I found the panel for me. HDCP compatible, 2 DVI connectors, plus VGA, 37" 1080p. Sounds perfect.

Link to AVS Forum.

I'll keep my old monitor on the desk for intricate detail work, and mount the Westinghouse on the wall.
