Just to chime in here - ad intensity, that is, the number of ads being served, has not increased. From my end, hoping to have some good news along the lines of ads for you guys before too long.

this is why people run adblock

WTF is this crap

Yeah. I am all for supporting good sites, but this is ridiculous guys.

Edit: the bad part is that this is FAR, FAR, FAR more intrusive that the home page at Tom's right now.

If you are going to blame the people serving up the ad, get a new group that has respect for the readers.

I do not recall this happening before the sellout.

I don't particularly like seeing ads like that either, so I tried to get some quick answers from the people in charge of those things.

What I'm told is that this is part of an existing ad campaign and will continue to run for its duration. I apologize for that but it's out of my hands, unfortunately.

If it's any consolation (and I know it's probably not), we're working on tightening guidelines for this moving forward so that it is regulated better in the future. We're also going to be placing a frequency cap on large, heavy ads like this so that users see them less often and are less impacted by them.

It is not like the ads are already being queued up.

How difficult is it to tell the ad people to stop it NOW if they want your business.

Customer is right, you are the customer.

By placing a cap, you are being complicit in this.
It is not a cap, it is zero tolerance.

You have assigned ad space for a page. If the ad people refuses to obey those, dump it.

The agency knows what is being accepted.

First, allow me to point out that I am part of the Community team. My jurisdiction resides, for the most part, in the communities, or the forums in other words. Ads and the like are controlled by ad ops and sales, so while I can relay any complaints and user requests to them, there is an extant to what I can coerce or force them to do.

Secondly, it's not quite as simple as giving somebody an ultimatum. Websites don't pay advertisers for their ads--advertisers pay websites for the ad space. In a sense, both sides are both a customer and a merchant at the same time. As a digital media company, advertising is an integral part of how we operate, regardless of how we as individual employees might feel about those ads. This is a campaign that was already signed off on and put into motion, so putting a stop to it would be equivalent to reneging on contractual obligations. But again, I am not involved in ad ops or sales, so my understanding of it may be a bit off.

Sounds like the way cable companies make commercials louder. You tell them to stop, and they just find another way to do it.

To someone not in Internet Advertising, this looks like a full-page ad, not a smaller ad space. And for what it's worth, I did not see the ad when I checked the page a few seconds ago.

Good to hear! The cap is working as intended then. I'm no longer seeing it myself either.

I am only mildly versed in ad-speak, but from the details I was provided, I believe that major, big-time ads like that should only appear once a week.

My patience for the ads on Anandtech is wearing thin. Everytime I see one I get one step closer to never coming back.

I got tired enough of it that I let Kaspersky's adblocker engage for AT. I like supporting the site, but they're ridiculous. Other avenues should be open.

For the love of god, please don't switch to in text ad links.

This is what I arrived to today on the Anandtech main page.

I took this screen shot and did some rudimentary measurements in Paint.

Total area of the screenshot is 108.7833 inches-sq.

Top ad is 26.0838 inches-sq.

Rightmost ad is 17.639 inches-sq VISIBLE.

Middle ad is 7.7439 inches sq VISIBLE.

Total adspace is 51.4667 inches-sq. 47.3% of space on the main page is ads.

I've NEVER run adblock as I always understood that for my favorite pages to make money and stay afloat (like Anandtech and the forums) they needed to deliver ads.

Ever since this junk started with these over-sized ads, I tried to bear with it, but just couldn't deal with the oversized ads anymore and installed ad block. Sorry.

Using same method as above, 63.8% of this screen is ads

And I live in Canada. Why would I be targeted with a bicycle show in Taipei? What's going on??

Anyone know who hosts the ads here? Somethings blocking me from seeing any & it's not AdBlock Plus or any other extension in FireFox. I'm thinking a host file addition but don't know what to look for.

Back in the day(FuseTalk?) these worked but i've removed them:

Yeesh, ads. I'm always afraid to weigh in on these matters since there's little I can do about it (Community is not in charge of the ads), and I know it's a hot topic.

I will provide what little info I do know though. Purch recently made the switch to programmatic ads (please don't make me try to explain what that is, it confuses me too) and from what I understand, the system we have in place could still use some tuning. It does not appear to be particularly good at ad targeting, often presenting some less than relevant ads. Hane's underwear ads on a tech site? Sure, why not. I hate it too, and the Community team raises a fuss over it whenever we can.

As for some of the ads not displaying, I'm not too certain on this. I know there is a banner ad on the forum that has not been displaying properly. Didn't fully understand the technical jargon of it, but I believe it is due to the improper implementation of a certain module.

Good grief! It wasn't bad enough with the drop down? Now I have drop down, go back up, drop down again. I hope it's only me. Going off to get some dramamine.

Out of respect for sites like this that depend on ad revenue I don't use things like adblock. This is getting so bad that I am going to reconsider-it's either the site fixes the ad or I block it or I just leave. It's been getting worse and worse over the last few days. Now EVERY time I switch a page (even going to page 2 of a thread) the page hops up and down in a very disconcerting and annoying manner.

This really has to be fixed-now.
