this new college football ad is horrible. forces the page to jump around 3 or 4 times before it loads. this is what it looks like

Yep, this is ridiculous. Text box is bouncing all over the place. It gives you the choice to close the ads, but then it starts back up.

Very hard to mod when we are chasing boxes all over the place.

I'm told this was pulled earlier this afternoon.
Does anyone screen the ads before authorizing.

If so, is the screen only on content/looks or how about having due diligence with respect to placement (both normal and mobile)

For such a respected tech site, it should be embarrassing that these problem show up so often.

The honest answer is no. Programmatic ads are not screened by Purch ahead of time. Our advertising division trusts the ad suppliers to properly vet the ads they accept and to properly categorize them so that we are only offered the kinds of ads that we want.

I find the idea of any ad that takes up a large fraction (1/4 - 1/3) of my screen offensive. (I say the idea because I've been using AdBlock for many years, and will continue to do so.)

I do imagine that, on large enough screens, the ad could be set to not take up 1/4 - 1/3 of my screen, if it were shifted over to the right and the forum controls shifted to the left, like so:

But a 250px ad just looks out-of-place anywhere up there. I'd prefer a pop-up to a 250px ad space. (Preferably a non-modal, dismiss-able pop-up that appeared at the top of the screen.)

Quoting this, because it shows the right way.
Yes, it's probably extremely bothersome to mod the forum to do this, but currently the top controls take up a ridiculous amount of horizontal space with nothing but emptiness, and could be repurposed to buffer the bouncing ads.
The ads could probably even overdraw into the upper part of the top controls, for a cheaper solution, since I have (at least in the reply view) quite some empty space there. Also, the head-"Anandtech"-barhas plenty of space that can be overdrawn. Long thread titles might get covered up though, and it might be problematic on mobile. For me, I'd still prefer that over not being able to click from 0.2s to 3.5s after the page has loaded, for fear of clicking wrong.

Edit: Also, for me it's around 50-80% of text-shifting ads.

thanks for the response.

It would seem then someone needs to have a talk with the ad suppliers as they are not vetting the ads properly as to how they are presented. The ads may be applicable in content but not in implementation

Glad you like it.

It shouldn't be extremely bothersome. I didn't Photoshop that screenshot; I made it by modifying the page's CSS with Firebug. (Not that I identified all the controls with CSS, but it should be doable.) All you need is the right CSS in a @media query, and suddenly, on large enough screens, the ad is on the right and nothing jumps around. (But on smaller screens and IE8 or earlier the ad would still make stuff jump.)

LOL
Hmm... do they know something about the guys here? Why are they thinking the kind of ads you want are for a bunch of women's dress stores?

Programmatic ads. The advertiser that wins the bid is going through their database of what they know about you and trying to find the most relevant ad.

Oh sure, we see ads. We eat our own dogfood, as it were. Otherwise we'd have a much harder time telling if something were broken.

Truth. Yes, many of us probably do use adblockers. On the Community team (and I expect this to hold true of other departments), we are instructed to whitelist our sites, ie all Purch brands, regardless of how we as individuals feel about the ads. As Ryan said, it helps us spot things that are broken. Doesn't mean we always catch everything on our own, but it helps.

So i did a little digging in my host file & removed (i believe) a Google related ad site. Fire up Firefox, disable all add-ons except NoScript & come to the forums. I start allowing sites to run scripts... anandtech & yahooapis are needed for site functionality i know already.
So i allow some sites permission then more sites want permission... on & on.
I finally see an ad after allowing 39 sites to run script. Really???
Also, somewhere in there Firefox warns me that anandtech.com wants to run flash. Are there flash ads here???

I also see this at the top & bottom of the page where the ads should be. This is just a little of what i copied.
Code:
!doctype html> html> head> style> !-- a:link { color: #000000 }a:visited { color: #000000 }a:hover { color: #000000 }a:active { color: #000000 } --> /style> script> !-- function ){var c this,f function a){var b typeof a;if "object" b)if a){if a instanceof Array)return"array";if a instanceof Object)return b;var d Object.prototype.toString.call a);if "[object Window]" d)return"object";if "[object Array]" d||"number" typeof a.length&&"undefined"! typeof a.splice&&"undefined"! typeof a.propertyIsEnumerable&&!a.propertyIsEnumerable "splice"))return"array";if "[object Function]" d||"undefined"! typeof a.call&&"undefined"! typeof a.propertyIsEnumerable&&!a.propertyIsEnumerable "call"))return"function"}else return"null";else if "function" b&&"undefined" typeof a.call)return"object";return b};var g String.prototype.trim?function a){return a.trim )}:function a){return a.replace /^[ s xa0]+|[ s xa0]+$/g,"")},h function a,b){return a b?-1:a>b?1:0};var p;a:{var q c.navigator;if q){var r q.userAgent;if r){p r;break a}}p ""}var t function a){return-1! p.indexOf a)};var u function ){return t "Opera")||t "OPR")},v function ){return t "Chrome")||t "CriOS"))&&!u )&&!t "Edge")};var w u ),x t "Trident")||t "MSIE"),y t "Edge"),z t "Gecko")&&! -1! p.toLowerCase ).indexOf "webkit")&&!t "Edge"))&&! t "Trident")||t "MSIE"))&&!t "Edge"),A -1! p.toLowerCase ).indexOf "webkit")&&!t "Edge"),B function ){var a p;if z)return/rv : [^ );]+) )|;)/.exec a);if y)return/Edge / [ d .]+)/.exec a);if x)return/ b ?:MSIE|rv)[: ] [^ );]+) )|;)/.exec a);if A)return/WebKit / S+)/.exec a)},C function ){var a c.document;return a?a.documentMode:void 0},D function ){if w&&c.opera){var a c.opera.version;return"function" f a)?a ):a}var a "",b B );b&& a b?b[1]:"");return x&& b C ),b>parseFloat a))?String b):a} ),E {},F function a){if !E[a]){for var b 0,d g String D)).split "."),e g String a)).split "."),m Math.max d.length,e.length),n 0;0 b&&n m;n++){var K d[n]||"",L e[n]||"",M RegExp " d*) D*)","g"),N RegExp " d*) D*)","g");do{var k M.exec K)||["","",""],l N.exec

Sometimes an ad will display in the side bar or bottom of the page but not on the top of the page.

So i go to the main site & do the same thing. I see ads there after allowing 36 sites to run script & get the warning that anandtech.com wants to run flash which i did not allow on either site.

I'm having a hard time feeling bad about blocking ads if i need to let that many 3rd party sites run script in my browser.

Thanks, I just saw one. I'll check with our AdTech team to see if we are specifying that as a size or the programmatic buyers are targeting them at the regular banner size.

Also, part of the problem is that the ads are loading asynchronously, which is what is causing the jumping.

I would care 100x less about a large ad if it didn't cause my screen to jump. Fix the jump and I'll stop complaining, almost definitely.

Just wanted to drop a note that I haven't forgotten about this. Still looking for a good solution that I can get everyone to sign on to.

Its too bad these hosting companies charge so much $$$$$ to rent space on thier servers.... I dont think ads would be as important if they didnt charge so much!!
