When I was in the Navy we had to burn up a lot of 5 inch rounds after the deployment. I got to shoot one.

Largest I've ever seen fired?
The first Tomahawk missle launched against Kosovo. I didnt see it from the bridge either, I was on the forecastle when the first one went off. (They sent me out to make sure no one else was topside, which is almost ironic in a way.)

.50 caliber machine gun.
I have called in hundreds of 8" artillery. Does that count?

I've fired a "24 pounder" naval cannon. The bore was about 8 1/2 inches. Old technology rocks!
Magnus has me on diameter, but I'm sure those 203 rounds weighed a bit more than 24 pounds.

edit: small arms, .45 Long Colt (pistol) and .45-70 (rifle).

MK-19, automatic grenade launcher. 40mm. Fired 40mm out of a M203 as well.

If we're talking about small arms, then I've shot the M2 .50 cal several times too.

Ok, I'll play. Do 37mm and 40mm grenade launchers count?

Back when I was a kid my step dad picked up an old Belgian 10gauge at this auction. Some vintage thing from the African colonial days I think. Anyway, we located some shells for it (no slugs) and I remember being surprised at how different it was from modern 12gauges. Ouch.

A black powder propelled .50 lump is probably the biggest piece of lead I've ever sent downrange, but it wasn't the hardest kicker. I've shot a few medium bore rifles that were particularly unpleasant, the .375Holland&Holland (double barrel too) being the notable one. Totally believe the reports of old African hunters detaching their retinas and fracturing collar bones with these guns! My neck hurt for weeks after giving that hoss a try. A family friend owns a .458Lott that I probably continue to avoid.

Wiki says "There are a great number of rifles (and even a few handguns) chambered for the .375 H&H." I wonder what the handgun would do to you? Beak your wrist?

some of you that shoot the big "guns" like the howitzer I'm jealous. i think it would be cool to load and fire one.

my little brother (well i was his big brother in the big brother program and kinda stayed that way the last 15 years) is in the military. he knows a lot about different weapons (not just military ones) and was going to show me hot to shoot properly and help me get a gun (show me which would be best). But he went and re-enlisted for full time service..the kid is going to be a lifer =)

while I'm proud of him for doing it now I'm stuck without him training me heh

I got to fire a round out of one of these when I was stationed in Korea. I was the radio/intercomm repairman for the company and they had extra rounds at the range so a handful of us got to hop in and fire away. Ka-Boom...
