For my money the best Las Vegas deals site is LasVegasAdvisor.com

Check out the Room Rates link in the Vacation Planner box.

This publication is well worth the subscription price if you go to vegas frequently.

Quick review of these hotels:

Stratosphere - decent hotel, not great neighborhood (sort of on the Strip, but separated from everything else). Tower is awesome.
All Station casinos - nice, and VERY friendly, particularly Palace Station. Eat at the seafood place - terrific fresh fish for pretty cheap.

Imperial Palace - kinda dumpy, but very centrally located.
Sahara - Old LV hotel, clean but not at all elegant.

Excalibur - like a scene from a Disney cartoon. Cutely done, nice neighborhood (very close to other major hotels, like Luxor, NYNY, MGM Grand). Rooms below average, and walls are VERY thin. Do see the dinner/show tho...makes Medieval Times look like street performers.

Flamingo: Old and needs work, but centrally located. Used to be a Hilton, and before that was Bugsy's place.

MGM Grand - nice, entertaining place. Rooms are well above average, and the ambience is just terrific and fun. Be aware that your room can easily be 10 miles or more from the front desk.

Circus Circus - entertaining to take kids to for the circus acts, good if you have an RV. Otherwise, find somewhere else to sleep.

Stardust - one of the old classic hotels in LV. Very cheap these days (over Xmas we got 2 days free and 2 days @$39, and I am NOT a high roller - the deal was posted here). Excellent sushi bar (kind of expensive - look in the '24' magazine in taxis for a 20% off coupon). IMPORTANT NOTE: All rooms at the Stardust now allegedly include 2 free meals per day - they advertise it as a free buffet, but their buffet is actually closed at the moment. They will give you a $7 pp credit at the coffee shop tho.

LV Hilton - good solid place, not all that entertaining, tho (except for Star Trek Experience, which I hear is great, and Benihana's - you have to see it to understand). Not on the Strip, but a short walk.

Tropicana - decent and very cheap. Needs remodeling, but you won't be unhappy there, and the neighborhood is nice.

NYNY: Sort of like New York City, but clean. Great free lounge acts right in the casino. Stay away from the expensive, bumpy and not all that scary roller coaster.

Paris: Sort of like Paris, but with nice people. Actually, has the most surprising and amazing ambience of any casino, IMHO. Lots of great restaurants.

Bally's: Plain vanilla, but rooms are very nice. Buffet (Big Kitchen Buffet, around $14 for dinner) is AWESOME.

Aladdin: Sort of like the Middle East, but without the terrorists. How would you like to own a Middle Eastern themed casino these days? Needless to say, they're in bankruptcy, but it's a great place, and the shopping area is terrific. Don't know anything about the rooms.

Luxor: Great building, nice casino, small noisy hotel rooms. But ABSOLUTELY go see the Blue Man Group. It's the most surprising and entertaining show of any kind that I have ever seen. Stay in your car if you have to, but see this show.

Bellagio: The crown jewel of the Strip. Awesome building, amazing fountains, elegant casino, world class art gallery (over $400 million in art), great restaurants, incredible hotel rooms. Of course, you will pay big money for all of this. I HIGHLY recommend the buffet, even tho it's expensive. Go for Sunday Brunch.

Mirage: Still great, with good food and interesting atmosphere. The hotel rooms, though, are NOT special at all unless you get a suite.

Treasure Island: Same as Mirage but more lighthearted. Rooms are decent but not world-class.

Hard Rock Hotel: Totally entertaining. The only hotel in which you don't enter directly into the casino. Haven't seen the rooms. Terrific Japanese restaurant - Nobu.

Venetian: Almost tied with Bellagio. Totally incredible place, with ABSOLUTELY the best regular hotel rooms (which are all 700sf suites). Service surprisingly good, restaurants are excellent, really feels like Italy.

Dumps: Barbary Coast, Frontier, Orleans, Gold Coast

<< MGM Grand - nice, entertaining place. Rooms are well above average, and the ambience is just terrific and fun. Be aware that your room can easily be 10 miles or more from the front desk. >>

This is no lie. We stayed in the very last rooms all the way at the end of the hall on our floor at the MGM Grand a few months ago and I accidentally left our valet ticket in the room. I told everyone to stay put and I'd run back to get it (anyone who has ever stayed at the Grand is on floor laughing at me right now). I hit the elevators closest to the check-in lobby and then started the walk to our room. This was maybe the third or fourth time I'd done that hike, but it really hit me how freakin' long it was taking me to get to the end.

On the way back to the elevator, I decided to time it. The result? Walking as fast as I could (right below what you would call a "jog"), it took FOUR ENTIRE MINUTES for me to make it back to the elevator. Just think about that for a minute. How far can you speed-walk in four minutes? That's one long stinkin' hallway. And the hallway is straight so you can see all the way to the end. It doesn't really look that far until you start hoofing it, and then it sorta appears to grow longer in front of you -- like a weird horror movie or something.

Great hotel though, the MGM Grand. Just don't gamble there.

And as far as oustanding "cocktail waitress scenery", my top pick is The Orleans. Simply outstanding. I spent more time watching those hotties walk away than I did watching the dice apparently.

Acme

p.s. The New York, New York is another mind-boggling hotel. If you've never been to Vegas (this was my first time), it's one of the ones that will drop your jaw. When you see what they've done to recreate NYC both inside and out -- it's stunning. Can't describe it. The roller coaster in top of the hotel is great too!

<<

hey wjones....I was on the strip during the millenium...I actually saw the guy who climbed the light post & died
>>

that's funny, i was about 15 feet away from the pole when it happened, right in front of Paris. lets just say it with the altered state i was in, it was really creepy.

also, i just got back from vegas last night, arrived last friday. for all you geeky ATers who have never been to vegas, you better get there as soon as you can. i stayed at the venitian, which was very pricy (over a $1,500 for the whole weekend). goddamn best rooms on the strip, period. contrary to what that guy said earlier, they are not all 700sf suites. all the rooms in the venitian are suites, but 700 is the smallest one. I stayed in the Rialto, which was over 1100 sq. ft.

also, take it from me (i've been to vegas around a dozen times already) the best girls can be seen at the venitian (not just cuties, but beauties) especially on weekend nights because of C2K.

>> contrary to what that guy said earlier, they are not all 700sf suites <<

Yeah, whatever. That's what I love about AnandTech - I spend 30 mins posting everything I know about almost every Strip hotel, and the one comment I get is that one.

Here is my amended review of the Venetian (please note spelling, deez):

Venetian: Almost tied with Bellagio. Totally incredible place, with ABSOLUTELY the best regular hotel rooms (the crummiest of which is a cramped, cheepass, nasty 700sf). Service surprisingly good, restaurants are excellent, really feels like Italy.

Oh, and for the record - I assume you (deez) gamble - if so, what the hell are you paying that kind of money for? I am a casual player at the Venetian, and I have yet to pay more than $50/nite, except Millenium NY Eve ($200). They have a deal going right now for $149/nite, buy one get one free, or $99 buy one get one free on selected days - plus you get 2x$25 airline vouchers and $25 in chips.

Went there twice last year. Once in march and again in September. Thank god we booked from Sept 3rd to 10th!!! Would've been stuck there an extra week if we went thursday to thursday.

Here's a quick list of stuff you must see and do when there:

Tropicana - History of Vegas Gambling Museum (Free entry with coupon)
Excalibur - Tournament of Kings Dinner Theatre ($ but includes the meal and show), Free dragon show out front
New York, New York - Roller Coaster (2 for 1 with coupon)
MGM Grand - Lion Habitat (Free to look and point and laugh)
M&M World - 3D Movie on 4th Floor (Free Admision)
Bellagio - Tropical Gardens in the hotel and Fountains out front are a MUST SEE! (Both Free) Steve Martin art collection is also worth a look (Costs $)
Ceasars Palace - Forum shops at ceasars (No deals but a neat free animatronic show, cool stores)
Oshea's (I think) - Free margaritas at the bar (Had like 30 of these during the Sept week, very refreshing)
Imperial Palace - Classic auto collection (Free admission with coupon)
Flamingo - Gardens and pools out back (Very lush, tropical, check out the monument dedicated to Bugsy)
Mirage - Volcano out front (Free, but lame), The Magical garden with the White Tigers was cool too (Costs $)
Treasure Island - One word. Pirates!!! Kick ass show! Love to see those brits sinking. (Free, of course)
Venetian - Gondola Rides ($, but scores major points with the wifey) Check out the architechture, too. (Free)
Circus Circus - Sucky hotel, but a great amusement park out back. Good place to leave the kids while you lose their college tuition. (2 for 1 coupons)
Sahara - Cheapest blackjack on the strip ($1 tables all the time) Great to get drunk at and lose a whole $15.
Stratosphere - Cheap room rates cause it's so far north of the center strip, great Music impersonators show. ($, but drinks included) Check out the tower ($, but the view is more that worth it, don't bother with the rides)
Freemont street - Budget a whole day to check out all this. Stay for the shows at night too (Free and cool)
Binion's Horseshoe (Awesome blackjack rules, major odds advantage)

Buffets to go to:

Rio - off the strip but good value for the money
Golden Nugget - Best on Freemont and Second best in the whole city
Bellagio - Major $$$ but damn good

Blackjack:
Binion's Horseshoe (Good Rules)
Sahara ($1 min bets)
Hard Rock (Rub sholders with stars, cool looking tables)

Other stuff to see:
Check out Belz factory outlet, I wasn't amazed but my gf bought tons of clothes.
Rent a car for 1 day and drive to the Hoover dam and the grand canyon south rim. Way worth it!
Lots of pawn shops, scummy neighborhoods and hookers south of downtown. (Some cheap stuff at the pawn shops is good)
Ethel M's chocolate factory (Awesome if you're a chocolate lover, like me)

A couple of extra tips. Rent a car or take the bus. Cars cost about $15 a day for the tin can model. Buses run all night on the strip. Go to the transit centre north of (behind) the Lady Luck and buy the bus tokens in a roll to save money. The cabs are fast but major expensive and major rude. If you get a package, make sure it includes airport transfers or get ready for a big cab bill.

If ya drive, stay sunday to thursday, then drive to disneyland for the weekend. Takes about 4 hours but works out WAY cheaper than paying weekend rates during high season at an expensive (or moderate) hotel.

Plus, have FUN!

I dont know about you guys but when i go to Vegas i don't care what hotel I am in because I only stay there to sleep. Sure the other hotels may have nicer rooms and such but when in Vegas you can go to any hotel you want to. My wife and I are going to Vegas next month for 4 nights and 5 days and are staying at the Circus Circus. Total package for round trip air and 4 nights a Circus Circus is $281...$281 that is for the both of us not per person for the entire stay. Throw in a rental car for 5 days at $100 and that is a 5 day stay in Vegas for under $400. We spent more than that for just a hotel and disneyland tickets last time we DROVE there. I found this deal on Vegas.com under the packages tab. It is actually through america west airlines but you can choose practacly any hotel there. Check it out and hope to see some fellow AT's there!!!

Just a side note::: for the same package i got, if i wanted to stay at the Bellagio penthouse it would have been $3000 more...DAMN, I'd rather lose that gambling!

Good rates. We just returned today from CES. We paid $55 per night from the 7th of January through the 9th.

We did some business with a gentleman who sets up the lights there. Never had a chance to go inside and visit during this trip though.

Buffets to go to:

Rio - off the strip but good value for the money
Golden Nugget - Best on Freemont and Second best in the whole city
Bellagio - Major $$$ but damn good

We stayed at the Golden Nugget back in '98. Overall, very good.

I spoke at length with some of the employees at the Stardust. They all told me that it's better to go with a package rate. Another thing too..... do not go during conventions or trade shows if you are on a budget. One guy told me that during next week they will be lucky if they hit 40 percent occupancy - city wide.

Venetian - Excellent accommodation, 2 27" tvs, 700 sq feet space for standard room, good service as well. Very pricey as well. Worth it.

Heading to Vegas with a buddy of mine over the long President's Day weekend. Scored $25/night at The Sahara with the funbook. Yeah, I know it's *far* up the Strip and not exactly four-star accomodations, but for that money I couldn't pass it up. I've already 'been there, done that' with the upscale hotels like Mandalay Bay and Luxor, so I decided to go on the cheap this time. R/T airfare from Cleveland with room from Saturday through Wednesday ran us about $235 each including taxes. That's a hot deal to me!

Oh, and The Sahara has $1 blackjack....that's just beautiful.

Anyone been to the new Sands yet? I hear good things.

Just got back about a week ago from 3 nights at the Bellagio and all I can say is... you get what you pay for. We stay there every trip and the service, food and rooms are all top-notch. Of course, it helps to be a semi-compulsive gambler and get your rooms comped every time.

Unfortunately, this trip was my first loser... and I left enough on the BJ tables to (almost) make up for 5 visits worth of comps

Getting comps is the way to go and anyone who is planning a trip should learn a little bit about the system. You don't necessarily have to gamble large amounts of money and there are strategies to be used to up your average bet, thereby increasing your comp level.

Just a few quick tips:
1. get players cards everywhere you stop in to play, just so they'll all send you special offers in the mail.
2. do most of your play where you're staying so you'll have a better chance of getting your rooms comped
3. (be careful with this one) your level of play, which determines your comps, is sampled every 1/4 to 1/2 hour (a guesstimate) by the guys in suits behind the tables... so if you're doing well, it never hurts to lay out a slightly larger bet whenever you notice them looking at your table with a clipboard in their hand (caveat: DON'T DO THIS WHEN YOU'RE LOSING, it'll end up costing you more than it's worth!)
4. ASK FOR THEM - most casinos don't comp you anything unless you ask. Ask for buffets from the pit critters at the tables and always check with the casino host before you check out to see if you can get your room or other expenses comped

i stayed at the bellagio a couple of months ago in their $600 a night suites. the place was huge, the size of a condo with his and her separate bathrooms. top-notch service and food is excellent. everything was comp so it made the trip even better.

Question about this...does it matter if you're playing $1 or $5 tables instead of $10, $25, and up as far as comps go? I mean, I'd prefer to play the $1 and $5 for hours on end instead of an hour at the 'blow yer wad' tables. Just wondered if you had heard anything about that. What did you bet when the boss was watching?

Comps are based on a formula that goes something like: $ bet per hand x 60 (or 120?) hands per hour x 2% (or so) = $ of comps

so, the more you bet, the higher your comps will be

Most large casinos on the strip won't "rate" you for less than $25/hand although I've heard that two (possibly Paris & Alladdin) will rate you at $5/hand

Off strip casinos and probably any other casino where you can actually find $1 or $2 blackjack will probably rate you for smaller bets as well.

Comps are directly related to your bets.
Only get rated when you are playing the big money unless you are looking for a free meal.

To add to the reviews:
The Regent:
Quite a ways off the strip, about 5-7 miles away in Summerlin.
Nice place to stay at when you don't want too much of the strip.
I really like staying here, quiet and you don't have to go through the casino to get to and from your room.
The rooms are spectacular 5 star all the way.
+ Jacuzi tubs, separate rainforrest showers, nice soaps, really nice staff, excellent spa, very good british restaurant, plenty of golf.
- Slow/small casino (don't even bother counting in BJ), expensive taxi ride to and from the strip.

Wow, may stay at a different hotel for next year'sSuperbowl. With the new proposed 'search EVERY bag' airport security measure with the recommended get-there-4-not-2-hours-ahead-of-time, it'd be faster for me to drive to Vegas for this year's Superbowl. Darn, is it too late to cancel my tickets?

On the bright side, for every hour you're stuck at the airport on the way to Vegas, you get an hour 'stuck' at McCarran...more time to quell a last-minute slots fix.

I go to Las Vegas once a year for the Consumer Electronics Show (last week 1/7 - 1/11), and stayed again this time at the Palace Station.

$10 advertised rate in the LA Times, worked out to about $24.50 with all the taxes and surcharges (double occupancy, $1 phone in room, and $3 energy, plus taxes). My first room totally sucked, very long walk, but totally unacceptable, it was smoking when I reserved nonsmoking. I hike back to the front deck and they tell me my guaranteed reservation for a nonsmoking room, was only a REQUEST. Calm but firm, and totally pissed internally, I tell them I can't sleep in a smoking room (and this one was a freaking ashtray of stink). The girl at the desk typs a bit, then asks if I want to speak to the manager and I say sure. Girl comes back without manager, and I get a free upgrade to a tower room. MUCH NICER, and the whole floor is nonsmoking.

Not a huge buffet like some others, the Feast is one of my favorites, because the food is actually quite good.
