Laser pointers should not exist!

Yesterday I visited a seminar, and the lecturer had a laser pointer. Little thing he used to aim at the board. Then suddenly he waved it carelessly and the freaking beam almost got into my eye! It was so unexpected! Even though I knew the damn thing was no good from the very beginning.
Do you think these things are dangerous for one's vision? They utilize a laser beam that can destroy one's eye, I'm pretty sure. I guess these things shouldn't be produced because they're so dangerous.
Then again, there's a new type of optical mice emerging - contrary to present-day samples which use optical sensor (red light), new technology is to use laser straight away. I can't remember how many times I flipped the mouse over and the red light shone right into the eye. Had there been a real laser, I'd probably be completely blind by now.
How do you think, are these consumer lasers really that dangerous? I think they well might be!

You got owned by the presenter. I think he just doesn't know how to use one. They're actually really nice to show what they're pointing at.

If you stared at a laser pointer for three hours while simultaneously stabbing yourself in the eye with a knife then I guess your eye could be damaged.

Retarded from birth or were you dropped on your head as a child?

Edit: I like Wally's response better.

Idiot.

You realize that even a few seconds direct exposure to the eye isn't doing to blind you.

They should outlaw knives, some could really just carelessly stab you in the face

I want to invent a laser pointer with a front-mounted bayonet, so if you fail to blind your enemy with the laser, you can still imaple their eyes with the bayonet. Brilliant!

Really? And what about laser surgery? Isn't it only a few seconds exposure?

Do you realize the difference in power intensity? That's like saying if i shined a flash light in your face for a few seconds i can burn out your retinas

One time I got my hand too close to the laser thingy at the checkout counter at WalMart and two fingers on my left hand were cut off by the laser.

One time I accidentally looked directly at the infrared laser in my Playstation and my face melted off.

Really. The lasers used in surgurey are an order of magnitude more powerful. Those things are even given an entirely different classification.

You didn't really think that our nanny-state government would allow us to have cheap lasers that could easily be used as weapons, did you?

Oh, and to prove my point....shine the laser on something else (say, your hand) -- it doesn't even get warm! Shine one of the lasers that they use for surgery on a plastic cup and it will begin to melt pretty fast.
