Hey everyone, I came across the following review at Amazon, which could potentially cool this deal off somewhat, depending upon the actual cost of "OEM" cartridges, and/or if you can put up with the alleged slowdown in output with refills/discount toner:

This was a great printer as far as print quality and speed... but what Minolta doesn't tell you in advance is that if you either refill the cartridge or use a non-new or non-factory cartridge, the printer goes into "deep cleaning" mode (permanently) while printing and slows down to about 6ppm. It won't go back up to regular speed unless you install a new Minolta cartridge.
This, of course, is a completely bogus excuse for forcing you to buy Minolta toner (which costs $130).
I called tech support to confirm that there was no workaround, and the woman I spoke with had received 4 complaints that morning on that issue.
So I sent it back and bought a Samsung ML-1710, which, although a little bit slower (17ppm instead of 21) can use any toner and seems like an excellent little printer.

In response to LIVAN:
I have no idea if the review at Amazon is true, however it is not impossible for the printer to keep track of SPECIFIC cartridges. Consider:
Hewlett Packard multifunctioninkjet devices have a built-in "ink level gauge" that also retains the serial # (and expir. date?) information of the last two cartridges used. In order to successfully refill cartridges from these machines, you can alternatively swap cartridges in and out. This of requires that you have a total of three cartridges whise date has not expired.
Who's to say that "The Minds of Minolta" (LOL) didn't do HP one better?
