I did too, for the parents, but it's still in a sealed box. So, my question is how does the HP Laserjet 1000 compare to the Samsung ML-1710? The toner carts. are about the same price.

Okay so in your opinion should I take back the HP 1000 and get the Samsung-1710? When it comes down to the bottom line, the samsung is newer [4/2003 vs. 2002], more RAM [8Mb vs. 1Mb], and prints faster [17ppm vs. 10ppm]. The HP on sale and with $20 GC factored in was $10 more. All this said, something is telling me to keep the HP.

I've had a HP 6L for several years now and it's been very reliable. When I bought it, it was given an okay review, but not the best.

Here's an update between the HP 1000 and the Samsung 1710. The HP 1000 toner cart. is $53 for 2,500 pages. The Samsung cart. is $79 for 3,500 pages. I found it intersting that BB where the Samsung printer is, doesn't carry the replacement cart for the 1710, but does for the older models. Office max doesn't carry the replacement cart. for the Samsung 1710, but OD does.

Thanks for the deal, but where's the $30 IR? At BB.com it comes up at $199.99 minus the $70 rebate.....is it me just not seeing it somewhere? Also, do you think it would be possible to get this $50 rebate from Samsung.com even though it asks for an original UPC?

Best Buy circular 7/27 back page. Does not say in-store only, but BB's been a little flaky on that lately.

Supposedly you can order for in-store pickup and they will give you the lower price when you pick it up by crediting your card, but then that might fall under their "no rebates if you get a price adjustment" policy. Your guess is as good as mine. I can't even figure out their "online rebates are for online purchases only" when they have online rebates that say "store only." Must all be part of a giant plot to confuse us so much that we just blindly purchase whatever they have at whatever price they choose.

Looks like the Brother does better on graphics and its toner is cheaper.
$30 ir comes off at the register.

We have a differnt printer on each computer int he house and they are all shared printers, meaning that any computer on the network can print on any printer on the network.

The Brother 1440 is better than either the Samsung 1710 or the HP 1000. For starters, it isn't a GDI printer, meaning it will work in non-Windows systems. It only has 2M of RAM, but it's expandable to at least 34M (2+32) and I saw one guy claim his 64M stick worked. It also supports legal paper in its tray (I haven't checked if the others do or not.) On top of all that, it's both USB and parallel, and even has an option for an ethernet module. A great deal if you can get it for ~$150.

assuming all computers are on at the same time/always on. Cheaper on electricity (and not to mention having to wonder if the other computer is on so you can print to it) to use a print server.

Not sure what you mean by that, this is what cnet says.

The ML-1710 driver supports Windows (98 SE and later), Mac OS (8.6 or later) and many Linux titles, including Red Hat, Caldera, Debian, Mandrake, Slackware, TurboLinux, and SuSE. (CNET Labs tested the printer with Windows XP Professional only.)

Good, I agree. I'll wait until it gets down to $99 - $149 again.
