It's comments like this that make me want to get it done.

Then there are sites like http://www.lasikflap.com/forum/ where a lot of people say that the flap never heals the same once its cut. Makes me very nervous...

Wait until implants are approved here like they are in Europe. They are a much much better option.

i had it done last year. LOVE it. i had customvue lasik which is a more precise and more expensive version and it decreases side effects over normal lasik. as an added bonus my dad is good friends wiht the guy who invented lasik eye surgery (Dr. Marnix Heersink) so I knew that the procedure was going to be done correctly and efficiently. I wore glasses from 2nd grade up to 8th when i got contacts and i DESPISED putting them on every morning. I had worse than 20/400 vision (i couldnt make out the big E, it was just a blur). the day after the surgery i had 20/20 and one week after that i had 20/10. my eyesight remains at 20/10 and i have no side effects. gotta love it.

What implants?

It's like a permanent contact that they put in your eye. I went to a special opthamologist in philadelphia for some eye problems last year and he is world reknown or something. Anyway, him and like 5 other guys invented them and he told me about them. So I did some research and they are awesome. Because it fits directly in your eye it corrects the whole problem by fitting to your eye unlike LASIK and you don't need for reading glasses after laser surgery (yes that's right many still need reading glasses even after laser), it is much safer, and supposedly they can get your vision better than 20/20. There are a lot of other benefits over laser surgury also, I am currently looking for the best link.

They are available in Europe, but the damn FDA with all the time they take for everything is still under the process of approving them.

I know several people of various ages who have had it done, and all have raved about it.

I will definitely be doing it in the next couple of years.

Problem with this is that it's also not proven and many will still play devils advocate. What's involved with implanting a permanent contact into the eye? What if you accidentally scratch your eye... will the contact be damaged? etc...

Are you talking about the lasik or the permanent contact?

Details please? Your negative experiences are that much more valuable here, given the unbalanced outpouring of praise so far.

Can't you fly to europe for a week and get it done there?

I remember reading a Golf Digest article from a few years ago about Tiger and dozens of other pro golfers and other athletes getting it done around 2000 when it first became wide-spread and thinking I'd never do it myself. However, I'm now 22 and my eyes have been relatively stable lately, so I'm thinking about taking the plunge.

I realize there are immediate risks, but once the procedure is done, have there been any common long-term risks? LASIK has been around for at least a decade, so there must be enough long-term data out there.

Or are all of us near-sighted individuals still better off sticking with contacts?

I had lasik done 7 yrs ago. have i been happy with results, YES. have there been negative side effects? NO.

btw, if you are interested talk to my brother in LA, CA. one of the top lasik surgeons in CA. he does about 20 procedures / week. (that's about all he does).

i'm not sure what kind of implants you are referring to, but there is one type of implant, they put a ring in your cornea to change the shape of it. it has had moderate success at best, actually my brother has 4 US patents on a procedure that allows him to adjust the thickness of the ring once it's in your eye.

the advantage of the ring over lasik is, the ring procedure is reversible, once in, if patient doesn't like the results the ring can be removed.

but it wasn't as good as the eyesite got worse, i think the ring wasn't good for anything beyond like -5 or so.

No it's not a ring, it is a lens.

It's in the eye and it can be taken out, so I don't see how you could scratch it.. And, they have been doing it in Europe for a couple of years with no problem so far.

Are you referring to intraocular lens? They've been FDA approved since '05 if I'm not mistaken. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out. I'd like to look into one of the options when I can afford it.

I had Lasik done about six years ago and it went perfect. I was 20/100 and 20/150 (can't remember exactly and I was nearsighted with stigmatism) and I am now 20/20 and 20/25 with great night vision, no halos and glasses. Yeah baby no fricking glasses or contacts.

I thought about doing this eventually, but what if I can't get corrected to 20/20 or better? I heard not everyone is capable of seeing that kind of improvement. I would still have to wear contacts. The strength would be lower, but the inconvenience would be exactly the same.

I had it done in 1998. My eyes aren't perfect, but they are vastly superior to the -7 I started with. I wear no glasses, not even for reading, which isn't bad for someone over 50. If you are familiar with presbyopia, you will realize that my eyes aren't perfect because I am still slightly nearsighted. It works out just fine.

Before the surgery, there were many things I couldn't do. I couldn't see enough to do anything athletic without my glasses. Those issues went away with the surgery.

It's fairly simple, essentially painless, and I consider it one of the best decisions I ever made.

I'm *heavily* considering it in the next year or two. I'm *okay* with glasses and never really cared for contacts for any extended wearing time. I just want to be able to do athletic things without needing any sort of corrective eyewear getting in the way or to be able to get up and read the clock in the morning without having to correct my vision.

That and I'm planning on having rugrats soon and glasses are just one more expensive shiney object for them to grab and throw to the ground

I'm 18, just had it done about 2 months ago. So far everything has been great. The night halos are gone (and were no worse than what i had with contacts) and my vision is 20/15
