With my glasses, my current vision is 20/20 or 20/40 depending on my astigmatism (spl). My vision is -5.25 so I'm basically blind without my glasses. Also because of my astigmatism I gave up on contacts. Hopefully lasik will/should fix both of those problems.

Been loking foward to lasik for a long time. It's gonna be weird to not wear glasses--been wearing them since 1st grade.

UPDATED
Got lasik yesterday. The procedure was really weird but only took ca. 10-15 minutes.
First they marked my eyes so they could reposition the flap correctly.
Then I got onto a reclined table/chair (think of a lazy boy where your head is lower than your feet)--so they could swivel me between the two lasers: first one to make the flaps and the second to fix my vision.
They put some type of thing over my eye so that my eye could be kept open for the flap creating procedure. It felt like it has suction--my vision was horrible so I couldn't really see what they were putting on me. Then I was told to look at the laser while the laser cut the flap. This took ca. 20 seconds and felt like there was pressure on my eye. Then they did the other eye.
After that they opened the flap on my right eye, I went from seeing poorly to really poorly.
I was swiveled on the table to the focusing laser where I was told to remain still and look at the blinking red light (the laser obviously). Then they counted down the time remaining. The laser gave off clicking noises and it went from being a completely on focused red blob to a tiny focused red dot.
Next she put my flap back while I was told to still focus on the red dot. This took ca. 1.5 minutes; she had the flap on but I had to look at the laser while they counted down.
Then they repeated the correction with my left eye.

When it was done my vision was like in the movies when they have a flashback with hazy vision.

I was given the anti-inflammatory drops, the antibiotic drops, goggles, and then went home. I kept my eyes closed on the way home. When I got home, 1.5 hours later--took longer due to traffic, my eyes hurt pretty bad. I couldn't open them and my eyes felt like they were scratched and lots of pressure on them; think of getting dust in your eyes and being really deep underwater at the same time. I was told to take a nap ca. 1 hour after the procedure and would have been nice if I had.

After I woke up from my nap (ca. 3 hours), my eyes felt fine. Like the first time you put your contacts in--a little dry, except there was nothing in my eye obviously. I applied the drops (anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drops). Then my eyes were fine the whole day. The rest of the day I applied the anti-inflammatory drops every hours and the antibiotic drops every 4 hours.

This morning my eyes are just fine, applied the drops via the orders. I will go for my post opt appointment at 1pm today. It's still hard to focus when reading and on the computer but its only been 26 hours since the surgery and I was told it will get better--I'll be updated today.

I have yet to use the wetting drops they gave me. Don't think I'll need them; in my pre-opt appointment they measured my tear rate and told me that it was pretty high.

What does "ca." stand for?

I'm in the medical profession. I've asked some ophthalmologists and I've noticed that very few of them (at least here in Canada) get the procedure done. When asked, they say that there is no long-term data on the safety of the procedure, and they can't risk anything happening with their eyes (it is their career).

I have met about 10 people who have been forced into the ranks of disability and early retirement because of a bad outcome from refractive surgery. They and each of the hundreds of people whom I have spoken with in the last 10 years all report the same thing - their surgeon lied in order to sell them refractive surgery; they were free from vision problems until the time of their refractive surgery; in most cases, they are living with constant eye pain in addition to refractive error.

to put a name on these people -

1/ Tina, an Intel engineer who was on medical leave for vision problems which onset after her LASIK surgery, last time I spoke with her.
2/ Myself, career design engineer, currently living with constant eye pain which onset at the time of LASIK eye surgery.
3/ Donna, received a President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Customer's Service from a shipping company - last day at work, the Thursday after her LASIK surgery; currently on disability.
4/ Roger D. - research psychologist forced to retire early & moved to Florida for the humidity, currently a web designer specialising in Joomla.
5/ Mike M. - Anaesthesiologist in Florida, forced to retire early after LASIK eye surgery.
6/ Kashmira - schoolteacher in Florida who stopped teaching because of a bad outcome from LASIK eye surgery.
7/ Judy C. - mother in Beverly Hills whose surgery, performed by Extreme Makeover LASIK surgeon Robert Maloney, left her with a metal sliver embedded in her cornea. Maloney has followed a legal tactic of stretching her med mal lawsuit out for several years - the result being that she is not able to speak publicly about what happened to her eyes.
8/ Dominic M. - a computer programmer in Philadelphia; unable to work as a COBOL programmer because of vision problems which onset at the time of his LASIK surgery.
9/ Gary V., a microelectronics technician at Raytheon, forced to retire after a bad outcome from PRK left him unable to see well enough to work on fine-pitch devices.
10/ Cameron H., administrator at San Diego State - an RK patient; forced to retire early due to diminished vision.

My CG (computer graphics) time was about 10 hours a day until I had LASIK. Now, it's 2 hours a day. The limitation is my capacity to use tools like Maya & Flash while working with eye pain.

what they said - some recent FDA Medwatch reports, about LASIK (several dozen/ a few hundred)
