Update - I went to Circuit City today, they have the TDK Velocd for $150 - $50 rebate = $100 + tax. Make sure the CDRW box says "burnproof" and the model number is 121032 and not 121032A. If it has the A, it means it's a rebadge of the Ricoh instead of Plextor. Good luck!

Heh...got me too. I was already fumbling for my wallet thinking I would be getting one sweet assed deal on a 32 speed burner I will pass, you you can get an oem 16x from Newegg for the same price.

Probably not, I think most of the newer TDK 12x are Ricoh. You could be lucky and get one from an old stock though, but I doubt it.

I just got this a few weeks ago on the buy.com DOTD for $118. I think I got lucky and got the Plextor one (it says on the box BurnProof, and I think the Ricoh ones use JustLink or something like that). Too bad I got it on June 4th, since the rebate offer is valid from June 16-June 30. Anyone have any ideas on how to get $40 off my deal (pm with another store using my receipt maybe and then get the $40 rebate)? Oh well, I still got a good deal, this is a pretty nice drive

Totally agreed. I got mine back in January and it is rebadged Plextor and is made in Japan. The newest TDK burners are Ricoh with JustLink, not Sanyo's BurnProof, although in technically speaking both are the same technology. BurnProof is Sanyo's trademark.

I don't think there's a standard for the order the speeds are listed in. I've always just assumed that regardless of the order, the numbers refer to:

highest (in this case, 32X) = read
middle (12X) = write
lowest (10X) = rewrite

I do think it's worth mentioning that Yamaha has a new burner in the works = 10X/20X/40X (yes, that's 20X write!) - learn more here. I skimmed the article but I don't see a release date for it. Can't be too far away, though...

Just so all you folks that actually thought this thing was a 32x burner...Your first clue that it isn't should've been the fact that the FASTEST available burner AT THIS TIME, is the newly announced 24x burner by TDK...The TDK CyClone 241040

...In other words, there AIN'T NO SUCH THING as a 32x writer! YET.

Everyone bags on the Lite-on drives, but I bought the Creative DOD last week and LOVE this drive.

With all the 16-24x drives coming out, I would imagine the price on 12x drives will drop. Actually it looks like CDRW prices are getting crazy like RAM is now.

I would take a 12x WITH Burn-Proof over a 16x without it. I about crapped when I saw the Yamaha 16x drive for the same price as the 12 Creative. Then I found out they slapped 8mb of RAM into it figuring that would take care of it not having BP.

From my experience burning CD's like a madman, BURN-PROOF is worth every penny and I wouldn't settle for a drive without it. My 12x rips through everything I choose to feed it with perfect results. I burned a 700mb disc of MP3's ripped on the fly back to CDDA in just over 7 minutes.
I would imagine you would get the same results with the TDK.

Common sense tells us the ripping speed is always the fastest speed listed on the product brief description. And writing speed is always faster than rewriting speed. So what's the point to argue?

32x = ripping speed
12x = writing speed
10x = rewriting speed

That is a good point. And what about media? They just slapped stickers on the Fuji's at OD stating they were 24x compliant. 32x would be 4.8 megs a second, which would rock, but what would the media cost? Everyone seems to be floating rumors around about CDR prices climbing this summer, but no one has said why. Or at least I haven't heard why. When they do hit 32x i'm sure they will figure out some way to screw us into buying a particular media.

/I just got an email from a discussion group that said the Plextor 10x12x32 is $127.00 at the Dell site when you use the 20% off. This would include free shipping. I tried to find the drive at Dell but had no luck, but i had a hard time navigating the site. The email also said that the 16x10x40 is $177.56 at Dell after the 20% off. Just thought i'd mention this since this thread discusses the Plextor too. I'm not sure if this is a hot deal because i've not priced a Plextor lately, but i bought the 10x12x32x about a year ago and paid $250!

Edit: I finally found the Plextor 12x and the 16x at the site. Couldn't find it by searching &quot;Plextor&quot; but instead tried &quot;12x&quot; and &quot;16x&quot; and that worked. Better look carefully tho if you especially want a retail version for the upc on the box (i thought there was a $20 or so mir for one of these drive and this would be important). If you really want a Plextor over a tdk velo for an additonal $17 i think i would do that myself just because i'll had excellent succes withe my 12x Plextor cdrw knowing that both should ship in retail boses. You all should know pretty much what you want. you should know what you specificitally want most of the time.time.`I would probably go the conservative way to be sure i get the actual RETAIL box so i can use the upc for the rabate assuming .i'm going with one that a rebate will qualifory.

Since CD writer got popular in the market of person computer and the price has been dropping like a rock, many CDR-media manufacturers established business in Taiwan. They kept producing a lotta surplus in CDR and that makes the price of CDR drop tremanously. Many Taiwanese manufacturers couldn't sell their generic CDRs or had to sell for junk price, and finally they were losing a lotta $$$. Manufacturing cost, labor cost, storage cost were killing them. At last many of them are on the path of going out of biz. (Prime Peripherals is one example. They are running out of cash and do not honor any rebates no more) With the supply decreases when many manufacturers going out to biz, the price of CDRs will eventually go up again. So it is not a bad idea to start stocking up CDRs right now.
