the Costo $899 + tax (out of $899) Toshiba laptop:
Intel Celeron 1.13 GHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HD, DVD, NIC, 14.1" Display

The dell Inspiron 2650 notebook:
P4-1.6GHz-M 14.1 XGA, CD-ROM, 128MB, 20GB, Modem, NIC for $1199 - 5% off coupon - $100 rebate = $1039 + tax(out of $1139) shipped free.

i have some question about the two:
1) does costco offer free shipping too?
2) is this toshiba laptop better the toshiba S157 (which was $699 AR a while back, or even $599 AR w/ pricematch)?
3) the toshiba is only a Celeron 1.13GHz, but it has DVD and more RAM (you can get crucial 256MB RAM for about $55 shipped). but isn't dell more expandable?

I have AmEx Blue, which doesn't have much use anymore I don't think. I've thought about the AmEx Gold, but I really don't want to have to remember to cancel in a year to avoid the annual fee.

I don't know if Costco.com ships free, but a warehouse is about five minutes from me and another one is only twenty minutes more so shipping wouldn't factor in. I might actually be in Oregon at the end of August which could save me the sales tax too if I went to a store there.

I don't know anything about the Toshiba S157 deal, I didn't start looking for a laptop until last week.

I don't know if Dell is more expandable, but it is definitely more variable when first purchasing it...except you can't get rid of any included software or OS. I don't want to pay for WinXP or Works, I'm not going to use them.

The Dell 2650 is faster, but my laptop will be for office apps only and maybe watching a DVD on the plane. I doubt I'd even notice the difference between the Celeron 1.13 and the P4 1.6. For those with more demanding needs, the Dell seems to be the better deal.

PLUS TAX: $1796.15
THEN Subtract 2% Ebates: $1760.23
THEN: Subtract $100 for memory rebate : $1660.23

Not bad for that good of a laptop! Notice the Dell UltraSharp Display, the Geforce Go4 64mb, and the extra Battery. I've been shopping for a laptop for quite a while now and this is by far the best deal I've seen for a desktop replacment notebook. I really think I will get this. If I do, then I'll add in some crucial memory (from all the numerous deals) and I'll be set. Anyway to make this better?

Four Questions about Dell:

1. Warranty: What do you guys recommend? One year is plenty for a desktop, but I don't think it is enough for a laptop (I don't know how to replace parts/fix things on a laptop.) I would like two years, but the only options are 1, 3, and 4 year. If I got the Dell, I think I'd go for the $250+ 3 year CompleteCare warranty. (BTW, the dell warranty explanation is terrible, no details, bad wording, etc.)

2. Additional $100 OFF. I'm looking at the Inspiron 2650 Select System Components page. In the "Special Offers" box at the top the first item is the Free Double Memory or $100 Rebate. The second item is the $0 Down QuickLease. The third item is "Additional $100 OFF" with each $1500 minimum system purchase. How do we get that additional $100 off? I put in a system over $1500 and it didn't come off. The link for it just leads to the double memory coupon, but it is clearly different from that. What's the deal?

Oh, if you carry on through to Checkout the $100 will be applied automatically. Unfortunately, they take it off BEFORE applying the 5% coupon.

3. If in the Select System Components page the item is the only one listed in its section and the round option button is greyed out, does that mean the item is included or the item is unavailable? I just want to make sure it comes with the floppy integrated into the machine.

4. Tax and Shipping Calculator. Is this thing broken? It isn't working for me at all. I want to see what tax rate they are charging and whether they are charging for the Warranty stuff which should be tax free. I've tried it in Mozilla and IE...create and account, enter location, no tax or shipping amounts shown.

I did a similar config as sxmp..... comes to the same price he got with tax. I'm sorely tempted on this especially when a local Gateway dealer tried to hook me up with a 600lx with less features than this and costing nearly $400 more. I don't see how you can configure it cheaper.

I am fairly sure you probably forgot the extra battery. As I reconfigured again and came up with the same price. Believe me, I would love that price, sure would be easier to break to the rents =) but alas...

I guess there are no ways to make this better. Oh well.

Great deals....and here I've been configuring similar systems for $2200 wondering when Dell was gonna start charging reasonable amounts of money for these things...Anyway, I can't seem to get the 5% coupon to work, and I'm assuming the $100 MIR comes in the box with the lappy, so you kinda have to apply that yourself to the final price. Someone gimme a clue

SXMP,

i did add the extra battery but I forget to choose "15.0 Dell UltraSharp". so I think the price you got is the lowest possible for the configuration.

kulki - I think the cheaper UXGA (1600x1200 correct me if I'm wrong someone) is a great LCD display, I would not pay the extra $100 to upgrade to the UltraSharp display. If you have money left over use it towards extending your warranty from 1 year to 3 years.

Here are the tech specs for the Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, pay close attention to Memory which states:
128 MB SDRAM standard, upgradeable to 1024 MB maximum
DDR RAM configurations include one of 128, 256, 384, 512, 640, 768 or 1024 MB
2 SoDIMM sockets, both are user-accessible

Save yourself some money, configure your 8200 to 128MB and opt for the $100 rebate, DO NOT BUY RAM FROM DELL simply because it's overpriced. After you have changed your configuration to show 128MB RAM then read bit's excellent Crucial.com Hot Deals thread where you can buy 256x2 for around $100 shipped.

thanks rossman for ur precise and quick reply.
Guys do u think its worth going in for a floppy disk drive anymore?
ALso I am trying to get the exact same specs as Bit described in his post for inspirion 8200 for 1399 but it shows up for me as 1499? Am I doing something wrong or did they just jack up their prices by 100 bucks?
thanks

I wouldn't get a floppy since it adds weight, bulk and expense. Unless you have an O/S which absolutely requires you book from a floppy disk I wouldn't get it because you can bootup in Windows from a CD-ROM startup disk.

Then again it's only $30 and you may need it some day, maybe get it if you never use it sell it on eBay.

Dell removed the "Breakthrough Prices on P4-M" link from their SB site (I assume because they are the devil). After following Bit's links from his 2nd most recent post, I can still get a similar configuration, but it is slightly more expensive now (almost $100 actually). Anyone having this problem, and know of a way around it? Thanx.

Well that's about as close as I have ever come to owning a 8200 configured the way I wanted it..... after much anxiety I hit the "send" button last night charging it to my credit card (Dell has generously offered me $3000 credit at 16.99%, which I have no intentions of using). I woke up this morning at immediately started freaking out about putting so much on my credit card when I'm planning a trip in just a month. I called Dell from work and cancelled my "small business" order. Oh well.

RossMAN:
I would like to agree and disagree with you. 1) I agree that the UXGA 1600x1200 is quite a beautiful display. 2) I disagree that the money is not worth it.

Having looked at many many many laptops in the past 6 months, I have come to find that I ( who admittidly has very bad vision) find myself sometimes squiting to view the screen especially in conditions where light is either TOO abundent or near pitch black, even after countless fidling with contrast/gamma/brightness/etc. Unfortuanatley I have yet to see a Dell UltraSharp Display, (it's on my list of things to do) but according to the specs, it should clear up any/most of my viewing woes.

Comparison of the UXGA 1600x1200 vs. Dell Ultrasharp UXGA: By the numbers

1) Resolution: obvious no brainer, both offer high res. 1600x1200

2) Pixel Pitch: another area where the Ultrasharp offers NO extra performance. Both have .190mm pixel pitch (really good for viewing, especially if you compare that to the average CRT Monitor.

3) Luminence: Here is the first place the Ultrasharp is beneficial. The luminence of all the 15in XGA, SXGA+, and the UXGA all have an average luminance rating of 150cd/m2. (I am not sure the labels to those variables "c" "d" or "m", but I've seen this unit measurement before.) In comparison, the Dell Ultrasharp has a luminance rating of 180cd/m2. Now I really don't know how this translates into real life situation, but in more comparison, the 14.1in XGA display has a luminance of 130cd/m2, so THEORETICALLY one can say that the brightness gain from Ultrasharp is the greater than the 14.1in XGA to the 15in XGA/SXGA+/UXGA. If this is true, then I would view this aspect alone as quite beneficial (ie. viewing in extreme sunlight will be less "washed out".)

4) Contrast Ratio is by far the biggest selling point for me. Heres the comparison: All the other displays 14.1XGA-15inUXGA all have a contrast ratio of 250:1. The Ultrasharp upgrades that ratio to 400:1. I again don't have any mathematical calculations to this, but again this is by the numbers, so it would appear a substantial gain.

5) While I don't view this as too benefical, there are those out there who REALLY REALLY would find it benefical that the normal viewing range of the Ultrasharp is quite larger than the normal UXGA. Normal displays +/- 40 degrees of horizontal viewing angle with nominal "wash out" or loss in detail. Ultrasharp has horizontal viewing with nominal decrease at +/-70, which if you figure, thats 80degrees larger viewing angle. Not benefical to me, as usaully I am the only one viewing my display, but perfect for those frequently showing collegues or friends whats on their display. Also the vertical angle goes from +10/-30 to +50/-60 again the numbers speak for themselves.

6) Not purely by the numbers, as Dell doesn't offer response times of other displays, but the Ultrasharp response time is 25ms. Which seems pretty damn fast if I can recall normal CRT display times/LCD display times. Also Dell claims thats an 80% increase in response time compared to the other laptop displays, again I couldn't find any proof, but they didn't lie anywhere else so I doubt they did here. Obviously the response time will determine how much "ghosting" a user sees when playing games or watching dvds, some people are more picky than others.

ALL in all, they sold me on the Ultrasharp display. I figure if I am going to be spending this much money on a quality laptop, why not upgrade the part I will arguably be using the most (the display). I plan on doing quite a bit of gaming, and DEFINATLEY a lot of movie watching, possibly not always in the best conditions (ie planes/outdoors in the sun/ in a car at night/ etc...)
--------------------

As far as floppy drives as someone mentioned, I see no real need. Now days most Bios allow boot-from-cd and with the extremely cheap prices of CD-RW drives and CD-R media, its almost cheaper to buy a CD burner and pack of 5 CD-RW's and use those instead of floppies.

Also, I know its just a cheap ploy by Dell to sell some 8MB "disk-on-key" units, but I really think that it is a creative alternative to floppies (other than the CD burner route) Of course both of these options (CD burner and Disk on key) require that you have a home pc that you can use if you do need to get information off a disk for some strange reason. But just my 2 cents.

I think thats it. I really look for the practicallity in buying a laptop. For example, I really feel I need a second battery, whats the use of a laptop if it runs out of batteries half way through that 8 hour car/bus/train ride? (Or the airplane trip when you want to use the laptop when you're in the terminal, then on the plane, then on the shuttle/taxi to your hotel. I doubt most laptops can do that on 1 battery) Also, just a quick little plug for Dell laptops. They come with both a touchpad and a pointstick, another practical feature.

Aight I really thinks thats it now.

As always just my 2 cents.

Just a few comments:

--I would *NEVER* in a million years buy a laptop with only a 1-year warranty--that first year is almost useless unless something is already defective upon arrival. My family has owned 5 different Dell Laptop models (Inspiron 3700, Latitude LT, Latitude C400, Inspiron 8000) now and trust me when I tell you that laptops will break and have numerous problems ESPECIALLY in years 2 and 3. Sure you'll save some money now but it'll cost you later once the warranty runs out....

--Concerning memory for the 8200, you can buy 256MB from the Dell S&P store for $59.95 a stick with free shipping AND an additional 10% off, so $53.95 total SHIPPED for each 256MB stick you buy. The same memory at Crucial (the non-generic) costs $94/stick with the 15% off discount. Only downside is that Dell is low on stock and it'll take a week to ship the memory (no problem since the laptop will take just as long to get here).

--Don't know about you guys, but I sure as heck got a much better deal in the home division for my config WITHOUT trying to get the coupon to work and all the rebate BS...you guys should really check it out. By the time you pay your 6%-8% tax your coupon is actually costing you money. They even have some great promos right now--free display upgrade (sxga to uxga for free, or uxga to ultrasharp for $30!), free hard drive upgrade, and free cdrw/dvd combo upgrade. I think that $30 upgrade solves the debate--I figure if I'm going to be using the laptop as a desktop replacement I really want the best screen possible for my eyes, especially with all the time I (and I'm sure many of you) spend on your computers. All the promos run out on Wednesday BTW.

Here a laptop I bought in the HOME division (no coupons or anything but I sure took advantage of all the promos!):

Inspiron 8200 Mobile Pentium® 4 1.6 GHz-M
Display: 15.0" Dell UltraSharp Display
Memory: 128MB,DDR,266M,1DIMM (gonna buy 512MB from Dell for $107.)

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Network Adapters: Integrated Network Card

Bundle: Microsoft®Works Suite 2002 w/ Money 2002 for DVD Drives
Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options: 3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year Mail-In Service
Internet Access Options: 6 Months of America Online Membership Included

Base Price: $1758
Tax: $0.00! (Dell Home only charges tax in TX, KY, FL, TN, NC, and NV--and I think that tax may only apply to the warra
Shipping: $45.00
TOTAL: $1803.00

Try getting that deal in the SB division! In SB division it comes to:

Base Price: $2227
Instant Discount: - $100
5% Discount: - $106.35
Rebate: - $100
Shipping: FREE
Tax: $166.73 (ouch! there goes my "savings" above!)
TOTAL: $2,087.38 after MIR

It would have cost me $2087 - $1803 = $284 more to buy this laptop from the SB division. Again, COMPARE PRICES TO HOME DIVISION!!

Oh, and DO NOT FORGET TO USE EBATES WHENEVER YOU BUY SOMETHING FROM DELL!! And USE NETSCAPE!! The one time I used IE6 with eBates they didn't record my ebate and I had to go email them to fix it. Everytime I've used Netscape (which I truly hate!) it has worked successfully--just got confirmation from them earlier today that my $35 is on the way for my purchase from Dell.

If you use Amex,

don't you get 2 years warranty if you choose the 1 year option? I thought AMEX was suppose to double the warranty up to a certain amount.

any ideas?

I know that the warranty is where they (dell) can make a real killing on.
