I just got finished making 3 SW reservations for Xmas holidays, and
then come to AT forums and lo and behold, a discount for SW.

go back, cancel all 3, and re-apply the funds to re-booking the same
flights with the 15% off. savings =$50.

lesson learned - always go to your ole GranPappy AT Forums first

Thanks much.

Are there any plans for SWA to expand to the northeast? I'm tired of paying out the nose on other airlines that end up losing money anyway.

They are already in RI and NH. Both much better alternatives to Logan if you ask me.

I also think they fly into NJ as well, but cannot say for sure.

I hate Southwest. I fly almost every week and they require you to show up early for a good seat. I spend too much time at airports as it is and don't want to show up AN EXTRA HOUR EARLY so that I don't sit between two obese people.

I've had nothing but good luck with Southwest flying out of Providence, RI.
You don't have to get there too early, and traffic/check-in/security is a BREEZE there compared to Logan.

I hear ya. I fly pretty much weekly. It's more known as the Southwest Cattle flights. To get the overhead bin space, you really need an A or B ticket. If you get a C ticket, most likely, you will be a middle seat passenger and will have to check in your baggage on the plane (PITA). I'm one of the ones who shows up an hour earlier, too. I hate it but in these economic rough times, you gotta do what you gotta do, especially if you don't want to be a middle seater.

For those who don't know, Southwest only does open seating (airline seats are not assigned and is first come/first serve). About the first 45 passengers who show up to get their boarding pass get an "A" ticket. In general, this means person #1 and #45 who probably show up with a 30 minute difference to the airport are in the "same class" so to speak. Usually, for each flight, Southwest has 3 lines for each letter. Then they let all A ticketers onboard first, then B, then C. On busy flights, people start lining up up to 1 hour before the flight!

Southwest has great prices but you pay the price with their open seating policy.

Thanks for the info! This is a great deal for those who fly Southwest Cattle (tm) often!

You have to show up at least an hour early for any flight any more, for security checks etc.

Southwest is the best airline out there and always are on time. (except storms, etc)
BTW: Southwest has had only one accident in all their years in business. A plane ran off a snowy runway, no one nor the plane was damaged or hurt.

That's not true. I travel so often that I've noticed you can actually arrive just about 30 minutes before (most of the time) but you are cutting it close. However, you will most likely be sitting in a middle seat. And the original poster said an "EXTRA" hour earlier which translates to 2 to 2.5 hours before your flight to get better seating (an A ticket).

I have never had to show up that early to get an A ticket on Southwest. I love Southwest and they are almost the only people I fly with.

I am planning on using my free flight to go visit some friends in Albany (SW flies there but you have stop in either Vegas or Baltimore, tough choice there?)

That's EXACTLY the other problem with Southwest. You accumulate your easily lost coupons to fly somewhere else that you can fly to cheap on their limited network. YAWN. With a real airline, like USAirways or Northwest, you could fly first class free to Australia or the Caribbean - a $12,000 ticket (to Australia at least). It might take you a few years to build up that high, but with the current kiosk bonuses, bonuses for e-statements, credit card miles through Bank of America, online ticket bonuses, that free trip to someplace REALLY NICE is closer than you might think.

A flight to Albany isnt cheap for me...$400+ on Southwest, so to me its more of a deal than it may be for you.

It wasn't a snowy runway, it was Burbank, California and the runway was completely dry. The NTSB investigation faulted the pilots for gross mis-judgement. Having been scared out of my wits several times on SWA, I no longer fly them. It's certainly worth a few dollars more to me for the safety and comfort of a major trunk airline. You get what you pay for in life.

Aviation Safety Network lists five "accidents" for SWA (including your Burbank incident). One is a passenger hijack (moronic passenger) incident and another is a hangar fire, though.
