Check your local Staples for these last of a kind printers.

The new Canon Inkjets use carts with chips and have about a third less ink. and are about 40-50% more money.

IP3000 49.50,
IP4000 49.50 AR, 99.50-50=49.50 till 11/26.
IP5000 99.50

I bought 2 IP3000s, 2 IP4000s and an IP5000...for the office.

FeuerFrei;

Find a IP4200 and pull out the carts and look. Also look at the reservoir size. They can be refilled but flash memory in the printer records that you refilled and warns you you've voided the warranty. There are no generics yet for their new printers either and who knows if there will be...other than chipless carts.

sucks about the new ink carts.... I like Canon printers, but with no generic ink, will have to consider other brands.

The MP780's still use generic carts if you need a multifunction. Takes the same cartridges as the IP3000 with the addition of a BCI-6bk black cartridge, I believe.

I'm out of the canon business. Gotta buy something else in the future. Got an S800 with a bad print head that only has a few hours of service over three years and the S600 (I think) that I had before blew the print head early. That one was under warranty, but that seems to speak ill of Canon to me. Laser engines seem OK, but no more Canon ink jets for me!

E-mail Canon and let them know your opinion of these new designs. And email them again each time you buy a different manufacturer's printer.

I call bunk!

The new Canon Inkjets use carts with chips and have about a third less ink.
Old text ink tank: BCI-3eBK / 27 mL (Pixma iP4000)
New text ink tank: PGI-5BK / 26 mL (Pixma iP4200)

Old photo black ink tank: BCI-6BK / 15 mL (Pixma iP4000)
New photo black ink tank: CLI-8BK / 13 mL (Pixma iP4200)

Last I heard, the chips that come with the new ink tanks are designed for better ink level detection. Therefore less wasted ink for Joe/Jane Average, who assumingly changes the ink tank(s) once the printer signals empty.

Least according to what Peter found (Copy text into Babel Fish unless you know German) months ago, unless something new came up since then.

Per link, the new ink tanks are also refillable.

and are about 40-50% more money.
About 22% more $ @ Staples. And if you print photos, the extended durability (assuming you want them to last) of the new inks could make up for the cost of reprints in the future.

$11.49 BCI-6BK
$13.99 CLI-8BK

Are they discontinuing the ink for these too? I own an IP3000 and absolutely love it, but can I still buy the $13 cartridges from Canon, or do I have to go generic?

The bci-6 and cli-8 both have 13ml, according to the Canon package.

Some generics have 15 ml for the colors.

The ip4200 will take bulk ink it just won't measure the ink so you have to check the carts. I bet a chip resetter hits the market really soon.

Good god do you think canon would stop selling the overpriced ink where they actually make their fat profits !!!

That will never happen !!!

You can still buy bci-21 carts.

How about the iP6000D? Does that not take generic carts? (Isn't the iP6600D it's new generation model that will replace the iP6000D just like the iP4200 will replace the iP4000?)

I was considering buying the iP6000D from Amazon at a clearance price of $80, incl. shipping; no rebates. Great price, I think.

Thanks,

~ JC ~

i picked up the IP4000. Open Floor model tho.
I was told they had 2 in stock. When I got there 1 in the box miraculously disappeared. ( took me like 5 min to get there ).
So i had to settle on the open floor model.
Ink is like 2/3's gone and they only gave me 10% off

iP6000D take "old" ink. It prints slightly better picture, text is not as good as ip4000, more like ip3000. Still very good text to my eyes.

Is the Canon Pixma iP6210D Photo Printer a newer model with the chips on the carts?

Nevermind yes it is, they call it the Ink remaining notification technology.........

Yeah, that'll make them quiver in their boots. Warn them that you're gonna go buy an HP. Er, scratch that HP is chipped. Tell them you're gonna go get a lexmark. Uh, no, Lexmark has the print heads in the carts and cheap replacements are non-existant. Tell them you're gonna get an Epson. Uh-oh, chipped again.

Tell them you're gonna start to make your copies freehand. That'll scare them.

The deal is still good tonight 12/05.
Stopped by our local Staples and bought the floor model of the IP3000 and the IP4000. The IP4000 had brand new ink carts, but the IP3000 only had the black cart installed. The others were missing.
IP3000 was $49.95 and the IP4000 was supposed to be $69.95 after rebate, but they gave me 10% off both printers since one was missing the cartridges... then they couldn't find the rebate form, so they refunded me $32 or so, and I walked out with both printers for $112.

The IP3000 uses the old FOUR cartridges, not five like the 4000 and 5000. I think that the IP3000 will be my new favorite printer

Well, they are chipped, but the new BC-8e's have the same amount of ink in them as the BC-6e's.

Does the Canon ip6000D also use the generic inks (sold by Swiftink, etc.)??? It is currently $109.99 (free ship) at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002U...UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=172282

I'm thinking about buying that if I can't find an ip4000/5000 at my local Staples -- I'm guessing they're already out.

But is the ip6000D inferior? Here's a quote from the CNET review:
"The iP6000D incorporates older technologies since the latest technology is typically reserved for the year's flagship model--in this case, the Pixma iP5000."
http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_Pixma_iP6000D/4505-3155_7-31091238-2.html?tag=nav

Advice is appreciated!! Believe it or not, I haven't owned a working printer in 5+ years. My old HP (which I paid like $300 for back in December 1998) somehow died a year or so later, and I"ve been too cheap / poor to replace. I have done all my printing at school (which I pay enough $$ for, so I have no qualms about printing hundreds of pages on their laser printers).
