I don't plan on seeing the movie, but it seems to me that they adapted a famous Japanese historical event(Katsumoto being a fictional version of Saigo in the Satsuma rebellion) and put this American guy in the middle of it. To someone like me, who has read about said event and Japanese history, it's almost as ludicrous as putting a Japanese samurai fighting side by side next to say, George Washington in the American Revolution, learning about uh, the frontier and no taxation without representation. There's just no way I could suspend my disbelief, as the idea is too far-fetched. I'll take a Kurosawa film any day.

In regards to white propoganda, I used to think like that. I even took a film class back in college about Asian American film. To me, the bottom line is that American filmmakers have to do it this way to make the movie successful in America. Certainly, an all Japanese cast in subtitles won't be nearly as popular. In that sense, I'd complain about the target audience more than the movie makers.

Joy Luck Club...I think a lot of people had problems with that movie because there was not a single good Asian male(under the age of 70, anyway) in that movie; they were all villains. Hollywood has a habit of making Asian men the bad guys, or in the case of the single good Asian father, old and weak. I suppose it's not as bad as it once was, but I don't think things will change for a very long time.

All white people are decendants of Asian people, by the way. A recent DNA based report from a guy at Stanford traced back human evolution and migration through unique genetic markers, it was really cool. Their last stop was a small tribe in Africa which was the "purest" genetic match for the world's population. So whites used to be asian and we all used to be black.

yeah...so only good things should be said about movie, I'll definitely keep my mouth closed unless I think a movie is great...if you can voice your opinion about it, why can't someone else, regardless of what he/she has to say?

i can understand the rant of the quoted OP. I'll have to watch the movie before i can comment on the worth of the movie.

But historically, in comics, books, and movies, asians were depicted as beasts, martial arts experts, demonic / evil, and feminine.
Also, in prevalent books that include Asians, there's the theme of "white savior". Where the "white person" always comes up with the solution to save an Asian Family or something else.

Might sound like BS but there are many books and Asian AMerican Literature classes which round it all together.
