funny how idiots like u are attacking me for.....what? did you even read my post? i liked the movie...i just posted someone else's opinion. But then again, looking at when you joined and the # of posts you have, you're probably one of those people that talk before thinking...go out and enjoy life instead of posting here all day.
what an ignorant and pathetic comeback. i made my post after your dumb ass forgot to actually put content in your message.
and i average 6 posts per day. wow i must have no time for anything else. once again,
moron.
that post was to Tetsuo. thanx for showing your high intellect and participating in my thread.
a post where he said nothing but quoted my post. damn you are dense.

your comments to my thread has been very informational. Obviously i was talking about Tetsuo's post #, but you are too dumb to figure that out.You are a moron. go talk non-sense in some other thread. but then again i bet pointless name calling is something that isn't new to you. People like you do not contribute in any way to society. if you have nothing to say about the topic, don't talk kid. discussion over. I will not deign to reply to any more of your stupid comments. Get out of my thread you are not wanted.

I guess whenever someone watches a movie in a field that they know a lot about, they tend to analyze the movie rather than enjoy it.

Of course a white guy is at the center of the movie. It has to so most Americans will go see it.

Personally I don't care if it has a white guy in it or not. If I'm going to see a samurai movie i expect to see Asian men. seeing a white guy just ruins the mystic.

I was talking about England, but many American men died as POW's as well. While we are talking about who the Japs should apologize to, we should add the Philipinos

that's what i thought....

i thought the movie almost vilianized americans....

donno i liked the movie..didn't care for any accidental political incorrectness...it was a story and that's what i took it as...
i'll probably even buy the dvd because of the beautiful protrayal of 1870s japan and the town and the story and cuz i liked the movie hehehe i'm being so incoherent right now i should be banned but i must study for finals now my mind is going insane

The movie didn't villanize americans. On the contrary, it villanized the japanese. The americans were there because the japanese had asked them to be there, wanting to buy weapons and training for their troops. The Samurai were the good guys (the good people of an evil country), led in part by the god-blessed american against the evil japanese army.

At least that's the way I saw it. I didn't write it, so I can't say that's the way it was meant to be.

However I did appreciate the movie on an entertainment standpoint, but I was disappointed in it in my view of the americanization of it. I would say that had the movie been made in Japan, it might have had the same story and plot but would have turned out to be a much better movie.

This is a somewhat biased opinion however since I am a fan of asian filmmaking. If you liked this movie, I strongly suggest the movie "Seven Samurai" and "Samurai: Musashi Miyamoto" both from 1954. The former is over 3 hours long though, but both are excellent movies.

Or you can tell yourself its just a movie, and not get anal retentive about it. I know about guns. I know that a revolver doesnt hold 20+ rounds. I dont crap myself every time I see a Western. In almost any action movie that you see (the biggest recent exception I can think of to this was The Way of the Gun), you see the hero blasting away for anywhere from 2x-5x of his magazine capacity without reloading. If he ever reloads. I dont throw a hissy fit every time this happens, if I did I could no longer watch ~75% of the movies I do.

Right. Because a white guy can never live by the Bushido.

It wouldn't have been the movie it was without an American. It was about his transformation from a generic American mindset to one of the Samurai. Nit-picking the small details is asinine. You could find racial injustice in any movie if you wanted to.

IMO anyone who sees Tom Cruise in this movie as a "white savior" is taking it the wrong way. The only person Tom saves is himself. From a life of drunkness, regret, and shame.

It's a beautiful and awe-inspiring movie. 5/4 stars.

I have no idea. never watched it.

If you're gonna blame anyone about Joy Luck Club, blame Amy Tan. Stupid liberal feminist, every book she writes sounds exactly the same. Oh woe to me! I'm female and I'm being oppressed by worthless Asian guy! Hollywood did a very good job of literally portraying her Asian-man-hate.

You sound like an Asian man who really hates the truth. I have some Asian friends, and their parents are the most fvcked up people.. Am I racist? No. I just don't respect Asian culture.

That's exactly what I got out of it, too. America was villainized, and Japanese Bushido was herocized, not the other way around. The film was very anti-American as a whole, with Tom Cruise, who had found a place with the Indians but hadn't been strong enough to stand for what he believed in, finally finding the strength to embrace a cultural belief system that he loved and to fight for it.

God, people with too much time and anger on their hands bug the crap outta me. Of COURSE there's going to be a white guy in the movie; it's a Hollywood picture. If you want an all-Japanese/Asian cast, then look to another movie/venue. This wasn't at all condescending, and I didn't get the impression that Cruise was 'teaching' anything to the emperor except reminding him of what Katsumoto stood for, not what HE (Algren) stood for, though he had embraced Katsumoto's beliefs himself.

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING PLOT SUMMARY CONTAINS SPOILERS

1) WHITE MAN (Cruise, playing a general) slaughters a village of innocent "redmen", then, feeling guilty about his actions, looks to atone for his sins in a foreign land,

He was a captain, and he didn't slaughter them (though the implication was that he did at least kill some of them), he felt guilty because it was a culture he had grown to revere, but hadn't had the balls to act on that belief. And he went to Japan for money, not for vindication.

2) namely Japan. Taken captive by the samurai, he learns the Way of the Warrior, & decides he wants to be one of them. Then,

Well, all right this is true, but far too simplistic.

3) WM gets to live in the house of the family of the samurai leader he'd killed in battle prior to his captivity, but for some magical reason the children of the slain man take a quick liking to him. Not only that,

For someone so condemning of the way Japanese culture is portrayed, he seems to not know much about it. The man he killed died a good death, in battle, as was his destiny, and so Algren wasn't seen as a murderer, merely another warrior. If anything, he would be respected because he killed Katsumoto's brother in battle.

4) but the slain man's widow finds herself attracted to WM. To add insult to the husband's memory, the widow asks WM to wear her hubby's armor in the final climactic battle between the samurai & the emperor's army. Then,

Again, it's a matter of honor and how the husband died, as well as respect.

5) WM is not only able to regain his honor on the field of battle, but also gets to enjoy the spectacle of the emperor's army falling tearfully on their knees in reverence of his heroic actions (actual scene, y'all). Oh, & in case I forget--WM is the ONLY survivor on the samurai side. Then,

The bowing had NOTHING to do with Cruise and EVERYTHING to do with Katsumoto. That's just retarded. Oh, and the reason Cruise was the only survivior is because Katsumoto, according to his belief system, had to die in order to preserve his honor. Cruise did not. Any samurai who had remained alive would have killed themselves anyway. Dumbass.

6) he is able to sway the emperor away from his most trusted advisor, & to assist in the emperor's decision over the future of the land. Then, looking forward to a life of peace in the country, WM retires

Again, this had nothing to do with Cruise and everything to do with Katsumoto.

7) to the village of the (now obliterated) samurai army, where he finally gets to shack up with the widow, who is overcome with joy at his return.

Actually, she didn't seem "overcome" with joy at any point in the movie, and seemed actually rather torn about her affections for Algren.

I saw this movie yesterday and was really impressed. I thought the historic background and the fighting scenes were awesome. The music was really good too. The asian babe was super hot...

I think some of you take it way too seriously....

I dunno...I came out of the movie with a good deal more respect for Japanese history and culture. I think whoever wrote that is getting all hopped up over nothing.
