LastPass or KeePass?

Curious which one do you use and/or recommend? I used to use my Palm PDA (ok, yeah I know, ancient but convenient), but no longer use one. I'd have several PC's in my home and a couple I use elsewhere.

I have concerns with both. For one, LastPass data is stored online, encrypted, but still not within my control, but sounds like it syncs data seamlessly. On the other hand Keepass you can keep on your USB key or on your PC. Not sure if/how well it syncs between PC's. I have a home server so considered putting it there, but would still like access when on the run, but I guess I could always connect to my home server to get the file, again as long as I can sync later (is this possible)?

Or something else altogether?

LastPass. Definitely LastPass.

I've used KeePass before - used it for years, actually. It's a pain to mount the media holding the KeePass volume, run it on the PC, etc. LastPass is so much easier... it seamlessly integrates w/ IE and Firefox, and you can access the passwords online (if you need to). I was initially scared to use it, but I found numerous reviews vouch for it, and they posted policies (can't remember if there was any source code) indicating that it's encrypted from end to end, such that they can't access your data. I trust it, though I'd understand hesitation.

I've been using KeePass...I really like it. Then again I've never used LastPass, but I find KeePass to be easy to use.

I prefer KeePass, since I have a lot of non-PC related passwords and keys in my database, and it's more convenient for me to use that in places where I can't get internet access but can get to a computer or laptop.

I use KeepPass because I can access the database from my Mac and Windows systems (synched with Dropbox).

Good point. I want to store other things there too like CD-Keys and other personal important information. Not sure if you can do that with LastPass. Maybe I'll try the free trial of both, but hate to populate all my passwords in both.

dont know if that was a slip, but Keepass is free. Also, i keep my keepass on my usb, home rig, work rig, and in dropbox...it's a snap sync'ing between all of those. essentially home and work sync with dropbox, and occasionally i'll update my usb with one of those...

oh yea, and i've also got keepass on my droid and it works like a champ

Available from any internet connected pc

Has 1 time account passwords you can generate for places like libraries or school to access your passwords online. Once you log out that password is no longer valid so key logging, people over your shoulder , etc cannot access the account

Plugin for browsers is updated fast. They had lastpass out for firefox and IE betas the same day they were released.

Secure notes - store anything you want as text and it is encrypted and stored with the account.
Can fill forms like roboform
You don't lose passwords if they were only on a USB drive. You can download all your data locally if you want to.
No data is ever received by them in unencrypted form. The data is encrypted on your pc before it is sent to them.

Lastpass is free for the above features but if you want to pay $12 for a year you can access the mobile features and more.

LastPass -- but I don't know anything about KeePass so take that for what it's worth. It works very well, easily accessible from my desktop, laptop, and iPhone. I liked it so well that I was already voluntarily paying thme $12 a year before I needed to for the iPhone access.

Wow, I didn't realize there was a version for Android. Checking it out now.

I use both. I sync Keepass in Dropbox with all of my computers and also have a password protected Excel doc with my passwords and programs with activation keys.

I own and like roboform but I get frustrated with their activation system (although they have always granted me more activations, usually within hours).

I tried keypass recently, I could not figure out how to get it to auto populate login info in a browser. You can request it manually from keypass but it does not just fill it in like roboform does.

I'm not comfortable with other solutions like lastpass that require passwords to be stored on their servers.

If you are worried they are going to allow someone to get your passwords there is no chance of that. Lastpass encrypts the passwords on your pc , they never have access to them at any time. The only thing they have on their servers is the encrypted form of your passwords. They don't even know your master password for the account, forget it and you lose all your passwords because nobody can get them back. They also allow you to keep the passwords locally on the pc while still being encrypted.

Personally I would never go for something like lastpass. Even if they are reputable, I just don't like the idea of keeping my passwords online. I have keepass on my USB key, and I have that with me everywhere, so it's just as convenient.

So, as an example, my title for this site is "anandtech", and when i login, the page title is "Anandtech Forums". If attempt to login to a page that contains the title of multiple entries, Keepass will offer you a selection to choose from

This is exactly why I love Keepass. You can create "super" passwords and never have to remember them. With some sites (such as banking) they're minor quirks, but still simple to set up for auto-fill. The password generator is great. I use a key file along with my master password for added security too.

I'm not an open source zealot but I think with some things it may be wiser to go opensource. Password databases are one such case.
