A UK business customer will be able to claim the VAT back, which is historically why computer stuff is generally priced ex VAT.

Doesn't help Joe Public though.

a UK RESELLER could reclaim it, not a business... If the business buys it to use, they have to pay VAT, if the business buys it as stock or components and then resells it, then they pay no tax.

So in those cases it will cost even MORE to the person who eventually is going to use it, due to markup.

Info on overclocking the i7 920 model - you are basically limited to 4400mhz.

"Nehalem works with a base clock which gets multiplied to create cpu clock, qpi clock and imc clock. other than amd which used 200Mhz as base, Intel is using 133Mhz as base. the base clock works pretty much like the fsb, as in cpu clocks is multiplier x Bclock. Just like with amds hyper transport the bus speed is created using the base clock and a bus multiplier.
So when you overclock the base clock to get a higher fsb and better throughput for the cpu, the qpi speed will come up as well.
so to max out the Bclock you need to lower the qpi multiplier, just like with amd... even when changing the qpi multiplier the max Bclock is around 220, so with the 920 you guys will be limited to 20x220=4400Mhz. Which is fine tho, to max out a chip on air the base clock limit is just fine, but when you go for ln2 or phase change the 220 will be limiting."

Even with exotic cooling, we are hopefully talking about stable speeds, not record breaking suicide runs. So 4.4 should still not be a problem, heck I expect getting a stable 4.4 would only be possible with exotic cooling.

I just wish someone would post/find VID range and max recommended vcore for i7 since new architecture...seems to need ~1.44 to get 4 Ghz.

With the limit of 1.65v, what do you guys think will be faster, higher frequency and latency or lower frequency and lower timing?

Example...

DDR3 at 1066, 7-7-7-20 vs DDR3 at 1333, 9-9-9-24

What do you guys think?

PS

From what I recall AMD's onboard memory controller preferred lower timing over higher freqency...

http://www.xtremesystems.org/F...ad.php?t=203350&page=3 Read post #60 and #61. In post #75, SF3D says the Foxconn board will cost $250.

According to Foxconn, all the way upto 1.8 volts should be safe and Asus claims anything above 1.70 volts is risky. I hope I won't have any problems with my RAM which is rated at 1333MHz @ 7-7-7-20@ 1.70volts...

None of these guys have to honor the warranty on your crispy-fried Nehalem.

Not the mobo guys, not the ram guys.

Listen to Intel and be wary of those mobo makers (or ram suppliers) who would like you to believe otherwise.

Core i7 might released next week.

I take everything they say in the link to actually be the most likely scenario, complete with trying to get the mobo makers prepared for an early release just to try and keep them from being too late to the real release date.

We tried two other sources but they too were skeptical about the mid-October launch date. These two sources are privy to Intel's planned launch and they claimed that it will either be in the second or third week of November. Both sources say that the final launch date has yet to be determined but it will most likely be in third week, rather than the second week.

We went back to our original source with the new information we obtained. Our source reasserted that the information relayed to us was exactly what they were told by their HQ and Intel representative just last month. It is possible that they were only told to prepare for an early launch so that there would be ready stocks of motherboards and processors by launch day.

Pretty standard supply change management if you ask me. Kinda sad to see a story actually dedicated to it though.

They got one dude at one mobo maker who doesn't know enough about his job to realize why he's told "be ready by mid-oct" and so he runs off at the mouth about "zomg dudes! teh i7 lunches next week!". Sad.

I'm slated to have them by the last week of November. We'll see what happens though.

Have to say, at those prices I'm glad I didn't wait.

I know a ton of people who felt that way once the hype over skulltrail faded and the prices and practicality finally started to settle in. (myself included)

8 threads at 4GHz with 12GB of DDR3-1600 sound downright sexy and god-like...but the sticker shock followed by the questions of "just how practical is this?" is going to be a real downer in my opinion.

I think many folks are going to be excited to read about nehalem, and will live vicariously thru their forum friends who do buy one, but then they are going to look at the price/performance ratio relative to a DDR2-based Deneb or penryn based system and they are going to buy such a system and spend a little extra on their video card.

8 threads at 3Ghz and 3GB ram sounds good too, and a lot more affordable...

Still I figured it would break down like this:

Mobo - $250-350
Chip - $550 (3Ghz one)
3GB DDR3 - $150?
T = $950-$1050 (zoinks!)

For well under $350 I got the system below which certainly performs more than adequately and probably similar to the above system with common single/dual threaded apps.

When the i7 prices drop to about the same level (a year, maybe more) I can indulge then and still have saved a couple hundred dineros (not to mention early-adoptor hassles, not that I really expect many).

I had to dig this up from page 5.

Anyway, my choice is set on Core i7 and the whole purpose of this thread was to get news about it, not speculate how inferior it will be price/performance wise.
