Well that would sure put an end to the 'omg teh googles will kill cell phone companies with their cheap phone!?!' hype. Too bad, since I was kind of looking forward to it.

Shrug. Welcome to the real world of unlocked phones. No surprise. $599 iPhone, $739 HTC Touch HD2, $540 Samsung Omnia II. Sounds about right.

LOL, and in the end, Google is proven to be a business.

I was sure this phone would actually be free & then google would pay me to use it every month. (sarcasm)

I don't think 530 is too bad of a price considering all that's in it. Compared to the other similar devices on the market its priced well!

Just a shame its only on Tmobile, for now.

It'll be interesting to see what the other carriers do now. I have the feeling they're not going to do jack shit...

The hype around this phone shows one of the problems with tech blogs, all speculation & no real data...

There IS decent data though. There are the terms of sale from HTC's side, the actual Nexus One buying page, etc...

I think this goes to say that in the end, a cell phone is a cell phone. The US market isn't going to get anything amazing. A $79.99 plan makes people cringe more. While I might be ok with it, all the iPhone haters probably now shut up because they viewed Android as their savior. Now a $79.99 mandatory plan? Gah. And at least with the iPhone, a $69 plan is the same as any other smartphone (BB, HTC WM phones, etc). Now a $10 premium with T-Mobile? And the nation's SMALLEST 3G network?

Don't get me wrong. The phone is awesome. Great hardware. But I'm glad there's a noncontract, non T-Mobile side to this. You can buy this unlike the iPhone where you must be an ATT customer.

If you're interested in this for ATT or even TMo, or any other network, let's not forget HTC's Bravo is essentially a Nexus One hardware with HTC's Sense UI. Wouldn't you much rather have Sense? See the Hero. It's a G1 and MyTouch done RIGHT. I think I might just wait a few months for the Bravo. Why? Because when Telus or Rogers or some Canadian carrier gets it, they will have an 850/1900 version that will work with AT&T. This is why many people who want the Hero in the US are forced to buy a Telus version (or forego US 3G).

Actually I'm not overly impressed by sense. Yeah, its nice but it seems to clutter things up more and at times make it more confusing. I actually like stock android better, at least for now.

Honestly, where do you get this stuff from?

Absolutely right.

AND: it shows Google that the Google FAILphone will be locked to a carrier. What's the difference?
(And all the idiots can SHUT UP: a phone that only works on one carrier's [ridiculously small] 3G network is LOCKED to that carrier!)

Look, I'm an AT&T user, but you must recognize the world doesn't revolve around us. 2100 frequency is enough to be used AROUND THE WORLD. So sorry, the Nexus One isn't locked to one's carrier. It's a TMo phone and also works in the rest of the world.

Too bad it doesn't come to AT&T. Too bad we have retarded frequencies that makes it hard for the rest of the world to make phones for us. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

What do you say to the rest of the world phones that have been huge hits? N95 (pre -3 and -4?) N82, HTC Touch HD/HD2, HTC Hero? That they're all "locked" phones because we can't use them in the US?

Honestly, where do you get this stuff from?

Well you know how there's a lot of people screaming about $70 data plan for an iPhone that doesn't do this, doesn't do that (but you could probably make the same argument for each platform too), and now the catch for the Nexus One is a $80 plan, I think the people who hated on the $70 contract should STFU now that it costs $80/month for Nexus One.

And yes, there is a lot of uncalled for hate on the iPhone. And a lot of these same people cry for Android like it's going to revolutionize the whole world. Yet, we still get the same contract phones or expensive unlocked phone on the side. I'm not saying Android sucks balls or Nexus One sucks.. it's just typical. The rest of the world has seen unlocked phones for $500. To many this is typical.

seems unlikely unfortunately. you can pray the HTC Bravo gets 850/1900 version. Sense UI on Nexus One = Bravo. I'd take that over a raw Android phone.

Eww I hate any skin over Android. Just give me stock Android. Don't need anything to slow it down.

Yeah but Sense isn't a big slowdown. It's really just TouchFlo 3D remade, and if TouchFLO runs so well on those slow WinMo phones, I'm sure Sense will be much better on a 1ghz snapdragon. It's a non issue.

I'd rather have HTC's little customizations here and there:

For example:
- Droid doesn't have multitouch in its keyboard. Typing feels like a resistive screen at times.
- Droid Eris has the multitouch implemented. You can type at iPhone speeds and everyone knows HTC's onscreen keyboard is a lot better and closer to the iPhone style.
- Sense just makes your screen more beautiful. If you don't want it, I'm sure you can remove it.

looks like verizon is getting the Nexus 1 sometime in the spring. So the phone isn't going to be "locked" to one provider.

Personally I can't get past the physical track ball.

What about it can't you get past? The looks? The location? You are not required to use it in any apps and it doesn't get in the way when you are using the phone.

I don't like it either. I don't picture myself using it, and I don't want something on the face of the phone that I won't be using.

I understand what you are saying, and I know I'm judging a device based on looks alone which makes me a bit shallow, but I know on my iPhone, I've never wished it had a trackball... When I look at the Nexus One, I keep thinking... "wish it didn't have a trackball though".

Actually, going from a G1 to a Droid, the trackball is the biggest thing I miss. I'm sorry...touch interfaces are nice and all....but sometimes you really can't beat a good hardware control.

Which, similarly, is why I'd take the Droid over the Nexus One any day. Yea, the N1 is faster and has a better camera, but no keyboard = no purchase for me.

No it doesn't make you shallow. It's a fair opinion.

And I'm also going to go out on a limb here, but I imagine half of the speed difference in the UI is more optimized code. They did it from 2.0 to 2.0.1, why not some more? I feel most of the code was unoptimized animations, the issues on my Droid definitely don't feel like horsepower problems, especially when some programs can do the same thing more effectively.
Look at Home++, the app drawer is amazingly smooth, no other home replacement, or the stock Home screen, have come close to providing a smooth app drawer scroll list (if I was vague, I mean the application scrolling within the app drawer). Too bad Home++ hasn't quite come through with what I want to see with it, so I've stuck to GDE even though it too has it's own little problems.

Hopefully Google proves me right and when 2.1 arrives for the Droid, it'll be just as smooth.
