im sure temps make a difference, but lowering temps aint gonna save a CPU from 1.8v.

thermal throttling should save the CPU from excessive temps.
however, excessive heat coming out of the case may not be something you want
i like my temps to stay under 50*C max. at my current speed i only hit 48*C max and thats during prime95. under normal gaming use i only see 42-43*C max.
adding voltage causes much higher temps then the overclock will. (of course you may need the voltage to make the OC stable) catch 22

hey jwyatt...

IMO, there does appear to be some boards reporting higher temps then others...I would reapply theraml and try once or twice, but if you don't get any changes then it is likely the temp reporting....My msi board reported 10c idle different versus my asus mobo with same cpu at same vcore with same hsf...only difference was I used AS2 second time. However AS2 after researching it will not reduce idle temps that much so I am looking at a potential of about a 6-8c temperature correction to alot of other mobos....

My new epox board ran about 4-5c higher then my old asus mobo with same conditions...Now I run my 1.6 higher then I ran my 1.8 but at less vcore by about .14v and epox is showing it about the same in temps...I kow that is bullshit...

Take temps with grain of salt but be concerned unless you can get verification from others....

Voltage I personally am done going past 1.7v, period....I did damage a cpu 1.8@2.52ghz with about 1.8+v...It stayed there a week then slowly started to be unstable until it came to rest at 2.2ghz and 1.55v for stability...."diminishing returns" watch for it!!!!

I just got my 1.6A from newegg last week. It's already installed, and I didn't write down any of the information that was stamped on it, but I do remember it was from Malaysia.

I'm running at 2.56Ghz @ 1.65V. Using an Asus P4B533-V and 512MB of true Samsung PC2700. It's perfectly stable here. I ran prime95 while looping 3dmark for about 8 hours without a problem. I have a feeling I could go higher, but I'm think I'm at the point of diminishing returns, so I'm going to leave it alone. I think the limiting factor is my memory, as I'm not perfectly stable at 145 with the 5:4 memory divider, but am at 160 with 1:1.

My only concern is that I hit 60C under full load during the daytime (the room I'm in gets very warm, and though I have a well ventilated case, there isn't much more I can do.) I have a feeling I botched the lapping job on my Alpha, so I'm going to redo it this weekend and see if I can lower the temp a bit. Even at night when it's cool, I idle around 48-50C. However, it is complete stable (and fast as can be), so I'm not that worried.

In any case, it blows the pants off my old athlon XP 1600+ on a Soyo Dragon+, which wasn't completely stable at default speed due to some weird memory issue. (With Corsair 2400 nonetheless.) I think it may have been the board, but it would only run stable with the slowest memory settings. I'm far happier with this setup.

I love my 1.6A

Wow! This is the first thread I've read regarding a possible extremely short life span an oc'ed 1.6a's. My OC is fairly conservative @ 150mhz fsb 2.4ghz. When running prime the hottest I've ever seen it is at 53C. Should I get even more conservative??

Thanks for the feedback!

My voltages are fine on this board. I have it set in the bios to 1.7, but only get 1.55-1.62 using MBM and sandra reports the same voltages. Ive settled it down to 170fsb with those voltages. When I go higher ie 175 i get random programs closing and such. Ive tried upping the voltage more, but didnt help. So 2721 is my actual running stable overclock on my current chip.

Im hoping the new one will be able to do 150fsb at least. Would make me sick if it didnt, but oh well. Ill post my results using the vapochill when I get it ready.

What batch of 1.6a retail have people been getting from z-buy.com? I'm just about to purchase one, and z-buy won't charge me tax, which saves me $8 shipped over buying from newegg. Any difference? Other than Newegg's great reputation for customer service?

Ya, I checked reseller ratings (always a good think to check, thanks for the reminder)... they got above average (barely) marks.... but I figured that wouldn't matter so much with a CPU as the chances I will need to return it are nill. I'm more interested in getting a newer manufacture date... but i guess with the 1.6a there isn't too much to worry about anyway. My goal is 2.4ghz, but I'd be satisfied with 2.13...

When I look to OC, I read stuff from ya'll. Okay, I got a Costa Rica(didn't know Intel made stuff there) 3/27/02 from googlegear.com (I ordered it like last week). Since I heard newer is better, someone tell me what to expect from this baby. I can take bad news so lay it out.
