Latitude D630 memory upgrade

I have a couple of months old D630 which I got with a single 1GB memory stick. I decided to add another 1GB to it.

I ordered this module from newegg: GeIL 1GB. I got it today, and installed it. However, as soon as I turned the machine on, I got the first screen with the Dell logo scrambled all over it, and nothing else would happen. Removing the module let's the machine boot and work.

So, I wonder -- is this just a bad module, or is it incompatible with D630?

When I was buying it, there's was only 1 comment that this memory worked fine, and I used GeIL for my desktop, and has been happy with it. Today when writing this message, I looked and someone posted a comment that this module didn't work in Thinkpads X61 and X61s.

This is a PC2-5300 DDR2 667 module with 5-5-5-15 timings. Is this the culprit? Any idea what timings the memory for D630 should be? I looked in the BIOS -- no useful info there (only the installed and available memory).

Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks,

-- Alex

Get CPU-Z and find out what the original memory is, and what are it's timings.

The D630 uses DDR2 667. It might just be a bad stick. You could try RMAing it and getting a replacement stick of the same stuff - if the same thing happens, try another brand since it could just be a finicky machine with what brand of RAM you use. The timings shouldn't be an issue as notebooks are not over-clockable, so the timings between various brands would and should be the same when the clock speeds are the same.

Well, he just got a $28 1GB module...

I have never had problems with generic memory from PNY - try that, you can find it on sale for about $50.

Some brands use different memory chips which can cause problems on a few systems. Dells in particular tend to be touchy with the RAM that they use.

All,

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to find out about RMA, and try another stick.

Does anyone have a D630 with upgraded memory? If so, which one worked?

Thanks,

IMHO I think you need to dump the module currently in it and get a 2x1GB memory kit.
