I noticed that people who brought their laptops to class either

1. Where doing something totally unrelated to class

2. Typed everything the prof said

You're supposed to listen and take notes to remind yourself of what you learned. Not write/type everything they say.

They need to purchase a tape recorder if they need "complete" notes.
What does 30 years ago have to do with anything?

30+ years ago calculators were not a norm. They got along fine, so why can't today's students?

there will always be those who type everything. but that doesnt matter as those are the same people who will write down everything

in my experiances, most all my classmates with the exception of a few know what to write and what not to write

Tell her to point to the page(s) in the university policy handbook where it says laptops may be banned in classrooms.

Not everybody can do this, then agian what course are you talking about? If your in science class or math, I doubt that you can do this as you do need to study concepts etc but if this is a "philosophical" type class like english, then I completely agree with you..

I partly agree, I think it's a good tool but it's abused too much.. The spell checker should be limited to writing papers and thats about it, while it may encourage the lack of knowing how to spell properly, it does help though when there are misspelled words in a paper that you didn't catch, a good time saver..

IMO, it shouldn't be automatic. Back when it sat there and bitched at you about every misspelling you made, it was a good thing. But now, with autocorrect, most people fail to realize that they made an error at all.

Well, maybe, but alot of law programs are requiring laptops these days. Why should students by them if their professors(or a professor) is going to ban them.

You're required to purchase a laptop in order to even enroll in class at my school, so it would be pretty distressing to a lot of students who just shelled out $1500 on a machine if professors started banning them in class. Definitely easier to get distracted and not pay attention using a laptop though, no doubt about that.

most likely, the students were required to purchase the laptops. they told us we had to have laptops at school, told us a specific dell config, even, and then the very first professor that my section had told us not to bring them to class.

waste of $2000.

Agreed, infact, when autocorrecter corrects mistakes I make, inorder to "relearn it", I delete what I had just typed and was corrected, rewrite the word again correctly and continue on because the last thing you did is what you'll remember and if you do it wrong, then you'll become a bad speller..

I don't support the actions of the b!tchy students, but I'd be pretty pissed if one of my profs. banned laptops. I type many times faster than I can write, and I can see the teacher and be more engaged when I'm typing. When I write I have to look at the paper.

On top of this, my handwriting royally sucks and I can barely understand what I write. Most kids who've grown up with computers haven't written anything in years and banning laptops takes more away from the class than it gives (typing does make some noise).

Why does she give a frick if they can think about what boring POS she is telling them? They are paying her salary so if they really rather play mindsweeper than listen to the lecture that they already paid for, then so be it. Sheesh...

Just let the damn students listen to lecture and take notes however they want! I think the professor has no business doing this. University students aren't mindless people who can't analyze their own productivity.

Onto the Spellchecker.............. If all the Spellchecker does is save time, I feel sorry for anyone using it. You'll understand when it comes time to actually fill out a form by hand or input information at a computer terminal without a spellchecker and someone points out that you misspelled your own name **LOL** You can laugh it off now but when that job comes and you lose it because they look at your resume' and think (what a numbnut), you can blame yourself, not the spellchecker!

3rd-6th grade did it for me. I know people that finished college and cannot spell the simplest of words like hamburger when they WORK AT A HAMBURGER JOINT!!!!!

The river's dry bud, don't cry............ This river no needy water!

Professor can?t Ban them if student has disability it would be dissemination same with tape recorder. I my self have terrible hand writing disability and unless I type it is totally un readable even to me.

You're kidding... right?

Are there really people who can type, but can't handwrite? I don't LIKE handwriting, and I'm slow at it, but I can certainly do it.

I know, it's called being 'sloppy'.

Wrong to make my hand writing even some what readable it takes me 5 minuets a sentence. I get cramps in my hands if I write more then page as well. I mostly only type with my two index fingers but I am fast at that. I never had professor who ever had problem with me making their life easyer by reading a typed essay for an exam then my hand written one.

I prefer to type my notes, then later on I'll reorganize them and retype everything in a way that makes more sence. Then as a studying tool for exams I like to condense information further into as few pages as possible. This thinking, condensing, and rewriting really helps me remember things. All of which is done on a computer because I can type faster than I can write, and no writer's cramp.
