i kind of know the advantages and disadvantages of both of these, but i just want to know how fine does the mulcher chop the grass? i'm afraid that it will make my backyard impossible to walk in because it will leave my shoes green... any opinions?

How about...wait for it...a mulching mower?

Most of those give you the options to bag your clippings, blow them onto the lawn, or mulch them into tiny pieces...

Yeah, I find the great outdoors terribly dirty don't you? I mean couldn't they replace the grass with Astro-turf or green concrete or something?

mowing my backyard... i should also prob mention that i am renting and do not care THAT much for the grass... it seems like a mulcher would be better for the grass, but i would hate to have green shoes every time i walk in my backyard...

ROFL! The city just installed water meters here and we'll be going from a flat monthly rate for water to metered service and rates.

Many of the locals are up in arms and are talking about taking out their lawns and replacing them with green concrete...or astroturf.

I finally decided to try mulching on my mower instead and it worked out pretty well... the clippings aren't exactly tiny but if you do it often enough it wouldn't be a big deal. I liked it better than having to stop and waste energy bagging it every 5-10 minutes. And no your shoes won't feel it.

I got a cheaper mulcher last year (I kind of regret not getting the 4 stroke model though) and it works fairly well but it does tend to start building up chunks at the wheel and leave tracks. Though last summer it rained every single day, maybe we'd get like a 6 hour period with no rain where I'd try to mow the lawn as fast as I can before it rains again, so the grass being constantly wet really does not help.

I hope it's dryer this year. But yeah most come with a bag so if you find it does not mulch enough or the grass is too high you can use the bag. If you mow it often it should be fine though. The small pieces die off very quick and "vanish" (wind, ground, etc)

Try to find a Snapper. I use a push (power assist) one to mulch with the split end Y mulching blade, double cuts the grass to fine pieces. Works great for me in blow, bag or mulch, just change the blade and attachments(two wing nuts).

i've had a mulcher for 15 years or so. works great as long as you dont let the grass get too long. otherwise if it's too long, you'll leave chunks of grass behind and have to go over it a few times. you do get a bit of green shoe (not much) on whatever you're wearing for the cutting part. nothing after the mowing is done.

What a travesty. They have to pay for what they use.

Anyway, considering much of California is just irrigated desert, xeriscaping should be more common anyway.

Just wear a shitty pair of "working outdoors" shoes that you keep in the garage or something.

You need to mow regularly in order to avoid the problems of mulching which include green shoes.

Or they could grow native grasses and wildflowers and never have to water their lawn again! Duh.

I've seen ads for genetically modified grass. You only have to fertilize it once every few years. Its grows so slow that you only have to cut it once or twice a year. And its very durable so you can walk on it without ruining in, despite its slow growth.

Much of the water that irrigates southern Kahleeforneeya comes from here in the north part of the state. WE have PLENTY of water in most years, although we're now in our 3rd year of a drought. (less than 75% of normal rain/snowfall)

This area has always been on "un-metered" flat water rates. This change really has people pissed off...especially since it was pushed by folks in SoCal who want "our" water...

I have to assume you're talking about a mulching mower.

It's just a mower, it just gives you the option of not bagging it if you want, you still can though...
