So even if you don't like the picture on a particular highly rated television you would buy it simply because it has good reviews and good specifications? That is your choice but common sense dictates you buy what you like not what somebody else tells you that you should like.

Didn't say that. The tests are real and measurable. If it measures well, chances are I would like it. If I don't, no, I wouldn't buy it. It not a case of "this tv is ok, but in a particular situation it's great so buy it." so I go and do it. It's the basis of, not the end all be all point I use to buy.

After I narrow my selection, I'd then have a look for myself.

Back in the 90's when ISF TV Calibration was popular, people would spend hundreds to have their sets calibrated and then complain they hated it and jack up all the settings again.

im in the market for a new 60 - 65 inch tv and most likely going plasma, but only because of the input lag on many hdtv's being total garbage.

most likely going with the panasonic st50 panel, but i need to test it out myself before i spend $1500 on it.

For a 60-65", it's pretty dang cheap. My friend bought a 42" Samsung LCD about 3 or 4 years ago, and paid about $1500 for it. The great thing is, a 60" ST50 now will blow away my friend's LCD in size AND PQ.

So in the end your choice is based on picture quality not merely by specifications. That is exactly what I said....

Speak for yourself. I'm all about real results. I will read review results and their measurements as the basis for my decision.

LOL...I think that's exactly what you said. But I see now what you meant was you will use them as a starting point to narrow down your decisions if I understand your last statement correctly. That is what most people do I think and then choose on the basis of subjective picture quality.

I really hate these stupid Plasma vs LCD discussions. Picture quality is subjective and even though the specs of one may win over the other that doesn't mean the viewer will like it better. Picture quality is an individual acquired taste. Nobody can tell you otherwise although in this forum there are many self proclaimed techno blowhards who try..... Just my opinion.

Please stop with the Kumbaya, let's all get along speech. The fact is, I never said one tech was better than the other (LCD vs plasma). I gave two SPECIFIC models and gave the reasons why I chose one over the other, and why I rated it as the better display. If you want the best plasma display currently available, it is the VT50. If you want the best LCD available, it is the Sharp Elite. Now if you are trying to decide between the 2, the individual will need to weigh the positives and the negative of each tech to see which they prefer. Like I said, I PREFER plasma, but the models being offered are not up to my standards, so that's why I'd put the Elite over the VT. Pretty simple.

I've dealt with SEVERAL people that bought an LCD over a plasma because they "preferred" the PQ of the LCD over the plasma in the store. However when they got home, they knew the TV was "doing something weird," but didn't know what it was (SOE). But they just kept watching it because ignorance is bliss. It sure was bright though. And everyone knows that a bright picture equals better PQ. The Elite on the other hand does a great job with motion (the VT still does a better job though), and is why I "think" I'd be fine with it.

hey JackBurton, you said you have a ST50 in the 60" model...

and i know you are into fighters as well...

have you tried out AE or any fighters on it? i'd like to hear your feedback on the input lag if so, and if you are picky about input lag and can notice it.

Man, I'd like to give you some real world feedback, but I've never played any game on the new ST50, let alone a fighting game. I actually have a Pioneer plasma. It's great for fighting games, but I don't think that's going to help you out with your decision on an ST50.

Sometimes stores will connect a console to the TV you are looking to buy. Have you given that a shot? Just make sure the TV is in "game mode" when you're testing.

I haven't actually seen it in any stores yet. The BB near me is under renovation or something, the store is a mess. I plan on taking my console with me when I do go try it out in a store. I'm going to Walmart on my lunch break so I may see if they carry it in that store.

Ideally I want to bring my 360 w/HDMI and VGA cables, and my joystick, and play in training for a few minutes to see how the lag is hah.

I'm most likely goign to get the 60", I think the 65 is going to be too big for where i want to put it. But I am going to measure it out before I decide.

I also am not going to purchase it without testing out gaming on it first.

Ehh LCD in the living room.
Projection in the basement/dedicated theater room.

If I was not going to go projection down there, I would only consider plasma.

Not many people are talking about them anymore, I guess, but the Mitsubishi Laservue DLP's will keep up with just about any TV there is, as long as you can deal with the size.

And it'd be hard to find the sizes they make at that PQ level for the money they cost.

They compared one to the Kuro a few years back, and the Laservue did very well.

I think the sheer size of the TV's puts people off, though. But bang for the buck, they can't be beat, and even if you throw that out and simply go for PQ, I'm still not sure they can be beat.

If I didn't want to hang my next TV on the wall, that's be what I'd get.

Except Plasma screens are pretty much pointless in a living room (or any room for that matter) with large windows, especially if tv gets any direct sunlight near it.

You are also comparing a TV to a Monitor, of course the TV will look better. Go compare that Plasma next to a Series 7 or Series 8 Samsung (or actually any Samsung of the same value really)

Are people still arguing about this crap? Jeez, let it lie. There is such thing as personal choice/preference. I don't give a rat's ass what kind of TV any of you buy! There I said it.
