In the US, yes. In Poland, it will cost approx. 50-70% more - which still means an outrageous price.

If it performs well in games, I'll probably get it anyway. What can I say, I'm not a fan of small widescreens and glossy coatings...

Looks like the Sony P234 might be the best 23-24" widescreen LCD to get for gaming since it's S-IPS and also reportedly very good image quality. Plus with 1900x1200 at 23" the pixel pitch is much tighter than a 24" using the same native res like the 2405, plus it doesn't squeal or whatever the Dell does.

The HP f2105 they reviewed was such a turd when I checked it out in CompUSA. It looked nice enough but the input lag was unbearable, even simply at the desktop. Ugh. They gave it an 87% in that FiringSquad review. It shouldn't even get a rating if it has lag like that.

thanks a lot and more power!!!

Go ahead and get the FP71G+. I'll replace that in my recommendations as well. I generally dislike ViewSonic nowadays and was not aware there was a suitable replacement.

I'd like to see some 4:3 panels in the recommendations in the OP. I'm particularly interested in 20.1" and for gaming. I've seen a few mentioned but don't know what's actually recommended. I've seen the following mentioned:
  • Dell 2001fp
  • Samsung 204B
  • Samsung 204T
  • NEC LCD2070NX
  • LG L2000C

I use the Dell 2001fp at work and love it for 2D and thought it was okay at games but haven't compared that to more modern panels. I tried a 740B and returned it, so I'm reticent on the 20" Samsung panels. The LG sounds interesting but I don't know if it's significantly better than the Dell that I've used. And the LG doesn't have the USB ports which I would miss.

A couple people who have 2001FPs here like them and one user has a 204B and likes it. But since those have come out, there is better out there, and frankly I don't know what is the best these days. The 204T's higher response rating doesn't make it too flattering.

Dell 2001FP has a 20 inch 16 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201U04) panel.
NEC LCD2070NX has a 20 inch 16 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201U04) panel.
LG L2000C has a 20 inch 8 ms (g2g) S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201U05) panel.

Looks like the LG L2000C uses the new panel and the Dell 2001FP/2070NX don't, at least for the time being. So by process of elimination, the LG L2000C is your best bet.

kgraeme, avoid the 204t for gaming. Many reports about input lag, just like in case of 214t and 244t...

204b is pretty good for a TN panel but image quality and viewing angles are inferior to modern VA or IPS displays.

If you don't want a widescreen monitor (I'm pretty much in the same boat, IMO: if wide, then 23-24" with 1920*1200 res), the best 20 inchers for you are surely the LG L2000C (new S-IPS panel, fast response time, great viewing angles, pretty good blacks but, strangely enough, some color banding reported) and the upcoming NEC LCD2090UXi (new A-TW-IPS panel, specs pretty much similar to LG but many new technologies, mainly for image uniformity purposes). The NEC should be a good monitor, since already its predecessor, the 2080UXi was a very popular, gaming-capable allrounder, especially in Europe. Its clear drawback is the price.

That's assuming that newer is better. The LCD lag issue is an example, I'm feeling a bit cautious. And I hate paying for return shipping.

edit: I'm hoping the Dell 2007fp has the same LG panel since Dell is popular enough to get tested by more hardware sites.

Yeah, it seems to be. The new NEC 20WMGX2 beats everything else (color accuracy, viewing angle, response time) using that new LG widescreen panel. It appears only large panels have trouble with the 'lag' but it's impossible to jump to conclusions about it at this point and thus impossible to use it as a basis of decision.

so has anyone reviewed LG L2000C yet? also flatpanels.dk reports the new BenQ FP2092 to have the same panel (has a 20 inch 12 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201U05) panel.)

and they sell that benq already, wonder if anyone reviewed that one...

Hi everyone.
I have about 350-400$ to spend on a new monitor, would 19" be an option or should I buy a good 17"? What are the models that are worth buying in this price range?
Main use will be gaming with some reading \ general use in between.

sorry for my horrible english

and PHILIPS 20'' 200W6CS (16 ms) @ 450?

could you please post any othr alternative that i might have overlooked

I have the 204B now and have been using it for about a week. I will say the colors and image quality seem great, BUT this is my 1st LCD so I have nothing to compare it to. I do agree the viewing angle isnt great but its a minor annoyance really unless you like to bob up and down while your watching it. Gaming on it is nice in WOW text is clear and precise. I dont notice any ghosting, I have no dead pixels but it does have backlight bleeding around some of the edges, overall I say its a 4 out of 5 but im basing that on my LCD newbism.

Welcome to the forums.

I'd say the NEC is worth the extra money over the other two. It has gotten rave reviews.

Welcome to the forums (and your English is good).

The Samsung 740B and 940B (B, not BF) are decent options for that price range and usage.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, there is a problem with the models you proposed I currently reside in Israel and they don't sell those here. My friends say I should look at-
730B \ 913B \ 930B , are those any good?

darXoul: but do you need all that NEC pro software/features? I keep mentioning the new BenQ FP2092, just that nobody reviewed it yet, so i cant be sure it really includes the new LM201U05 panel. the new LG L2000C looks a bit better maybe, but i actually need to have a video.in input, that the benq has and LG doesnt

I'd say the 730B and 930B are the next best things.

First brief review of the NEC LCD2090UXi I found.

Hmm...well I'd be dying to get that thing, except: holy crap, it's almost twice as expensive as that 20WMGX2, and when they say a 'little' blurring you can probably assume there's more than the 20WMGX2 also (coupled with the higher rating). I hope they just release a 4:3 version of the 20WMGX2 for a reasonable price. (I'm being quite conservative by saying 20WMGX2 is reasonably priced eh? )

Just an update with my bad case of VP930B and maybe a tip for those considering it, make sure you try to display a complete color gradient (like those in MS Paint), and see if there are weird flickering on some color hues, particularly the red ones. I've tried 3 of them and all of them showed the same defect!!

The reason I say this is you may not notice it the first time if your wallpaper and windows color is mostly gray or blue

I don't know if this is my extreme bad luck or just a bad batch of product

Anyway, I'm trying to work something out with the store I bought it from, maybe replace it with one having similar spec and price range. I tried asking for the VP191 but they say it's out of stock. Any recommendation?

I think you just got a bad one. I looked at various color gradients in Photoshop and see no weird flickering on my VP930b. Is the flickering real noticeable or is it very subtle? It's possible mine may exibit this problem but I just can't see it.
