Yes I've read the majority of posts here on anandtech but everyone seems to stress one issue: Resonse Time

So what else should I be looking for when I'm buying my lcd monitor?
I'm working on a budget here so creeping up into $400 is cutting it close.
I found the ADVUEU 723A 17" LCD Monitor with Speakers on Newegg for $300
it has 16ms response time even though I have never heard of the brand, it looks like a decent bargain

I know someone is going to shoot this out of the water but before you try to persuade me to buy the Dell 2001FP can someone explain what is wrong with this monitor and how i should go about trying to choose a lcd monitor for my needs?

Uses for my machine: wide variety incl gaming, programming, web surfing, documenting .......

Recently picked up Dell 1703FP for 433 shipped including shipping and taxes.
Monitor is awesome, has DVI input as well.
DVI input works flawlessly with 9800 pro.
Even with 25mm respond, there's no ghosting.

A 16ms response time should give better results (read: less ghosting effect) but some LCD displays spots no difference with higher (around 23ms) response time.. If you are going to invest a LCD monitor for a long time.. try to go with trusted names.. at least you get better trusted products and support. Also make sure that your display have no "dead pixels" which can be sometime annoying.. do a search on Google on dead pixels for more info..

For a purchasing on a budget it's okay and I'd use it.

Just got one myself. No dead pixels. No ghosting when playing dvd movies. I do not play games so no opinion on that. Display is very bright. I have it set to 1280x1024, which I suppose is the native resolution, at 60Hz refresh rate and true color. Don't know about reliability since it is a new brand.

The speakers are weak though.

I've got a samsung w/25 ms response and I haven't yet seen "ghosting". The only problem is it takes a decent bit longer to switch resolutions than my old CRT. 1 dead pixel after almost 2 years, but it's right by my start button and hardly noticeable.
