I just built myself a new box. A good mid/high level, graphics heavy machine based on the June 2007 Hot Rod box on Ars Technica. For the full specs, you can check out my other recent posts. But here's the relevant stuff:
Core 2 Duo E6420 on a 965 Express board
2GB 6400 2v 5-5-5-12 RAM
eVGA 8800 GTS 320mb
Now that've got it up and running, I have to make the very important decission of which monitor to go with it.
I had been looking at the LG L226WTQ, however after having seen it in the store a few times I'm not quite sure that the viewing angle is good enough. The color, brightness, and contrast change drastically with rather small movements. And considering I will be doing a decent amount of photo editing on this machine, I don't know if that's going to cut it. I'm guessing that a TN panel isn't going to cut it, no matter how cutting edge it is, so it looks like I'll have to step up to P-MVA, S-PVA, or IPS.
Now, to complicate things, this computer will also be used for gaming (probably an equal amount of time to the photo editing) and for watching video (maybe more than anything else), so response time and input lag are still important.
Lastly, I'm looking to spend no more than $400.
One thing that caught my eye is the Acer AL2051W 20", which is what's recommended on the Ars Technica Guide that I based my build on. It is a P-MVA and claims a 176 degree viewing angle. However, I'm not too keen on the glossy coat, and I feel that, since I'm willing to spend $150 more that the current $250 price of this thing, I can hopefully do better.
So... what do y'all think?
