Hmm, are you sure your 17 inch LCD isn't just downscaling 1600x1200 to 1280x1024 or similar? The only 17 inch LCD that I know of that does anything near that resolution is the SGI 1600SW, and it does 1600x1024 (a wide aspect ratio LCD, actually).

I think rsdi is another term for ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)=red digital de servicios integrados (RDSI). I could very well be wrong but you may want to look again for a brand. This is however the only connection that shows up relative to monitors.

Which sounds fine until you think about it. After all, WTF does ISDN have to do with a monitor? Unless it also does double duty as a terminal or something.

No offense, but.....

I don't know....When I ran MonitorsDirect toolkit it recognized that my monitor was indeed at 1920x1080. This could mean that it is downscaling it, but I guess I'm not sure if it is.

I don't know if the toolkit reads back DDC information, or if it just reports whatever res your computer is currently running at. BTW, does this mystery LCD connect with a HD15 or DVI connector? Do you have any numbers or other information on the back / bottom / somewhere else?

It connects using a standard VGA cable.....

I'll post the numbers from the back of the monitor this afternoon (I'm at work now). I searched google, google groups and couldn't find any info. Funny enough, in a newsgroup discussion a guy had the same question I did about this same LCD.....but nobody could help.

Hopefully someone at AT can!!

Later....

Cool pic. I was not suggesting there is an ISDN interface on the monitor. I was saying that the only time I saw rsdi was in connection with isdn monitoring programs. I was thinking that since no trace of rsdi as a company was found it may not be the manufacturer of the monitor. I may have phrased the post wrong.

I apologize. It was late.

No problem...I was just joking (as you can tell)!! I'm desparate for an answer, so any attempt to help me is better than nothing!

Line-of Sight issues, why do LCDs look bad from an angle and are their some with the same Directionalism as CRTs? This issue is one of the main reasons I'm staying away from LCDs.

Here is the info on the back of my LCD:

RDS

Model No: INV-S17

S/N J200110009449

On the front of the LCD it says: RDSi (not just RDS as it says on the back)

KristopherKubicki,

Any chance an update on near-future LCD releases will be included in the FAQ? I'm about ready to go out and buy a Hitachi 174, NEC 1760NX, or Planar PX191, but I'm incredibly interested in what's going to happen in the next couple of months. Not just an update on a new Samsung (like a 16 MS 17" or 19"), but also other LCD developments (like A low-response 19" or better/newer 16 MS panel)? I'll be using it for gaming, and I'd really like a 19" but with a low respose time or a 17" that doesn't have the dark color problems the AUO ones do. Here's a quick question: With your insider knowledge, should I buy now, or will I be happier if I wait a few months? And, would you buy a CRT today, when there are all these great LCDs? Thanks!

Jeff,

If you are totally committed on a CML174, drop me a PM i have a pretty decent coupon code. I personally would recommend the PX191 of that whole bunch, simply because its the same Samsung panel as the 192T and it looks damn sharp.

New LCDs are kind of in a lull right now (exception samsung ans planar). We had a lot of talk with LG.Philips concerning their 16ms solutions as well, and they have a few interesting monitors hitting the market. We will do our best to bring a new sample to AT before anyone else does. As for 19" 16ms LCDs, no one is saying much. I actually got a very interesting talk about response time from LG.Philips that kind of confirmed my belief that the 'low' response time of 16ms really doesnt help as much as we all thought.

The (huge) FAQ i am putting together addresses about 40 issues concerning LCDs, including an evaluation about what to look for in an LCD today. I do like the Planar PX191 and the Samsung 192T (I will be able to give you a little more info about them in the upcoming days). Unfortunately, if you are a pretty big gamer, I would still stick with a tried and true DynaFlat or Trinitron.

Hope that helps, and dont forget to check out the FAQ in a few days!

Cheers,

Kristopher

Kristopher, thank you for your quick reply to my questions! It's much appreciated! I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do (buy a current LCD, buy a CRT, or wait), but out of curiosity, if you had to recomend a 19" CRT for gaming, what would it be? Thanks!

LCD screens are very confusing, this FAQ will help! As you know KristopherKubicki - the question that's on everyone's mind is: What do I get? ^_^ Good luck answering that!

Is it common to see blocks of color on the wallpaper? On certain wallpapers, it looks like there are patches of color, this also occurs in other spots, usually around a gradient of colors.

That kinda sounds like a wallpaper/resolution issue. Try the same wallpaper on a CRT at the same resolution, it probably will look very similar. Dunno for sure though, but I've seen some whacked looking wallpapers before.

Can you put to rest the myth that 25ms = 40fps and 16ms = 60fps. I've had people tell me that I should set my max frame rate at those settings since the LCD cant handle any more.

Hi Everyone,

Our FAQ is about 23 pages and 6500 words right now. We got a lot of great information from LG.Philips, Samsung, NEC, AUO and a few other monitor manufacturers for technical information.

Please feel free to add more terms that I can put in the glossary at the end of the review!

Cheers,

Kristopher
