LCD for graphics/CAD?

Hi.

Id like to hear some thoughts from "graphics people" who use LCD for photoshop/CAD work. Mainly id like to know how well LCDs these days suit for graphics related stuff compared to CRT.

Ive been reading a lot about LCDs but i dont see that many people commenting how well the panels work for graphics.

Well i have been using LCD's to do solid modeling for the past 2 years and i have to say i like them better.

At first i thought it sucked... well maybe because i started with a sucky analog LCD screen. But once i got a better LCD screen with DVI i feel in love.

But other will say CRTs have better real world color (i agree) but the newest LCDs are damn good and you would have a problem with them.

I'm a long time AutoCAD user who just recently upgraded from a nice 19" Viewsonic crt (1600x1200@85hz) to a Dell 2005fp. I had and loved my Viewsonic for a little over 6 years but never looked back after using this lcd.

I'd like to add my interest in this question!
I just read through the LCD Buying Guide sticky, and still don't know whether or not I should go with an LCD, and if so, which one would suite my needs best.
I definatly need a new monitor.
I sit in front of my pc all day at work, using Photoshop for art/photography and Fireworks for web graphics.
With that in mind, can anyone make a recomendation on a monitor that's not too highly priced (I work for a non-profit.... ).

I work in CAD daily, and am in the process of replacing my 21" WS Gateway with the new Samsung 215tw. The extra screen space offered by WS is wonderful, I will never go back to a standard 4:3 monitor, especially a CRT.

Both the Dell and the Samsung look like fantastic monitors...... however, at that price range, I would probably never get the money out of my boss!

This is a man (my boss) who works on a 15 inch crappy monitor, with a video card that has no drivers installed..... I kid you not, he can't even run 256 colors on this thing!!! I don't know how the heck he can spend 1 minute in front it. I can't even look at it from across the room without getting uncomfortable.... LOL
If it weren't so pathetic, it might be funny

Anyways, we are a non-profit school serving adults with developmental disabilities, not much money, and I don't know if I would ever be able to convince the boss to fork it out......

..... but I won't now if I don't ask!...

Compared to getting new CRT, getting qualty LCD seems to be more difficult than i expected.

It might help if you give us a range of how much you want to spend for One LCD Panel.

Well, anything around 400-500? ($510-$640) or so... Im not in hurry to get the LCD, i probably buy one sometime later this year.

Theres some nice 20" widescreen models (VX2025WM, LCD20WGX2) but ive seen some people saying the pixel pitch is way too small. Alternative would be to find 21" but those things are expensive.

Anyone have any idea if theres any good 19" non-widescreen LCDs that are very good with colors/blacks and so on? Perhaps some newer IPS panel?

If you have that much, you could get either of those LCD's that were mentioned above!

I would have the best chance of getting the money if I kept it under $400.

The Samsung 215TW was $549.99. I have only had it a week, but am loving it so far. There was a fairly extensive review on it on these forums a bit back.

Let's say I am able to get the money to purchase this beauty..... next question is, what video card should I use. Would any card that will dispay the 1680x1050 resolution work?
I am not going to be gaming on this pc, only using it for image editing/design work. I currently have a fairly in-expensive vid card that will display up to 2084x1536, but I see no actual choice for 1680x1050, only 1600x1200 or 1920x1080 are close.

that will take care of itself when you plug the monitor in. I didn't have to reinstall any drivers or install extra software to use the monitor at its native resolution

ok....Looks like I can get aproximatly $550 to do this with.
I need some help please! I get so nervous about spending the money that I have to lobby so hard to get.... hehe. I just want to make sure that it's well spent, and that I don't end up with any regrets (learned that one the hard way.... darned turn-key video editing systems...)

The purpose of the monitor(s) again will be for graphics/web design and image manipulation.
Should I go for:

a) One large monitor that takes the entire $550 to purchase, and if so, which one? Still not sure about widescreen or not.....

or

b) Two 19" monitors and an adequate vid card to run them (if even possible for $550), and if so, which monitors and card?

About the Samsung 215TW, i used the search and i just cant get any "hits" when using "215TW" as the search word...

Anyways, the 215TW sounds nice, id like to see some extensive reviews on it though.

Ive got the same "dilema" really, not sure if i really should go for the widescreen. Good thing would be it that it would work for watching movies/tv which would be awesome. The thing is, is there such a display that is able to give performance that is enough for graphics/cad editing and even have enough "juice" to playback video adequetly...

I would like to know what people think between the Samsung 215tw and Dell 2007wfp when (if) issue is fixed with banding. I think I have narrowed my decision down to these two monitors....... I think.....

WOW! You just read my mind! I've been going back and forth on my LCD purchase and can't decide. I am a Mech. engineer and do alot of 3D modeling desing work, spreadsheet, writting papers and code. But I also wan't to be able to get good video/tv performance.
I've been really tempted by the NEC 20WMGX2 but compred to a 5:4 19" or 4:3 20" it looks small. I really love how the Optibright(glossy) screen looks and would just get the 90GX2 but it uses a TN(for gaming) display and I'm not a big gamer so i can't decide! I also like the Samsung 204T but it has a 16ms resp. time so video might not look too good. Damn it!
