There are two "levels" of interface connections which may account for the image on your laptop (appears the backlight is being driven, but the LCD drivers are not driving the screen properly). The first one is the interface between the LCD panel drivers (mounted on the back of the panel typically) to the lap top motherboard; passing through the hinge. This connection is often through a "flex" cable. The other interfaces are the LCD panel drivers which generally use a capton-type flex circuit to interface to the panel. The video driver on the motherboard drives the LCD drivers on the panel which in turn drives the LCD matrix.
You will likely have to take the LCD panel out to determine the root cause of the failure. The flex cables are generally custom (fabricated by etching a conductive layer, much like a PC board) and will survive many flex cycles. In the couple of instances I have encountered similar failures, the problem was not the cable, but a broken solder joint. The LCD driver connections may be difficult to fix without the proper equipment.
If your laptop is under warranty - I would go that route. It may be difficult to get access to the LCD panel without damaging the enclosure. Otherwise, you may wish to search for lap-top disassembly/assembly info on the net.
