Hello,

My brother's 17 in lcd broke during shipping and we are getting $450 back from the insurance.

What is the current best bang for $400 - $500.

It doesn't have to be 17", in fact bigger is preferred.

He is big into gaming so ghosting is an issue.

Thanks

I don't have any experiences with the Dell LCD's so I don't know how well they do in gaming, but they are recommended a lot and every once in a while there is a sale and you can get one in your price range.

Keep an eye on the Hot Deals forum. Not long ago, the Dell 2005FPWs (20.1" widescreen) could be found for under $500 if you stacked your coupons right and added the appropriate filler items to your order. This is an excellent gaming monitor with very little ghosting and good color reproduction.

The big issue is that its native resolution is 1680x1050, a resolution that some games can't manage (at least not without some configuration file editing). It will also display 1280x1024 natively if you tell the monitor to display the image in a 1:1 aspect ratio, which gives you black bars on the sides of the screen but allows you to play the older non-widescreen compatible games. Another problem is the the native res of the 2005FPW can bring all but the most powerful graphics cards to their knees on newer games like HL2 and Doom 3.

Theres deals on the 2001FP every once in a while too and because the reasons mentioned above I would pick it over the 2005FP.

I wonder if its an 8bit or a 6 bit panel, viewsonic site doesn't have that extra info.

Get a DELL 1905FP 19 inch ULTRA SHARP Flat Panel LCD. You can ether wait for a coupon and get it from dell under $300 or u can get a New one of eBay for about $360. This is the best bang for the buck deal ever. If you want you can even get a 20.1" from dell for $450 on ebay.

I got a refurbished Dell 2005FPW for $448. With tax and shipping it was under $500.

I'm happy with my Dell 1905FP. I figure its a stop gap for the time being, for ~$300 i can probably buy the 20" widescreen for that much in the next year anyway.

Are you saying that you can change the possible display resolutions for a game by changing the config file? If so, could you tell me how to display Diablo II in a higher resolution than 800x600, because I just bought a new 8ms 19" lcd monitor and displaying it at that low of a resolution leads to some less than ideal image quality.
