LCD monitor technology

I'm in the market for an LCD, on which there will be no gaming, but instead mainly for visual work (graphic design) and general purpose usage.

My research has let me to the conclusion that have to get a S-IPS or PVA screen to get 24 bit color. Now that's fine by me. Thing is that I can't for the life of me find out which technology a particular LCD uses. I have my eye on three displays right now:
+ LG1730P
+ Sony HS75PB
+ Samsung 173P

Of these three I only know that the Samsung is a PVA display and that's based on the logical conclusion that since it's bigger brother 193P is a PVA, that must mean it is too. I wouldn't be surprised if after all it turns out it is a 6 bit TN+film instead.

Anyone know of a website with comprehensive specs for the LCD monitors out there? Thanks!

24-bit color?

I thought panels were either 6-bit, or 8-bit.

The only way to know for sure is when you get the monitor, crack it open, get the model # off the actual LCD panel, and look it up on google.

You can somewhat tell via the specs. Non-TN panels tend to have bigger viewing angles. TN panels have viewing angles of around 140 horizontal and 130 vertical for the regular ones, with 160 horizontal and 140 vertical for the better ones. Note that this is at a contrast of 10:1; if a manufacturer is trying to inflate numbers by using a contrast of 5:1 instead, then their 160/160 is probably actually 140/140, etc. True VA panels (i.e. MVA, PVA) are like 170 degrees in all directions or 175 degrees in all directions with a contrast of 10:1.

Other than that, the best thing might be to go to a store and look at it yourself.

yep, i was gonna say the same thing.
also, dont assume that bc one is basically the bigger or smaller vesrion of the same thing its the same panel.

for instance, my 710T is a TN display while the 910 ended up being a PVA.
Also,m LG Philips makes some 19" TN's with 8-bit color (i havent seen a 17" yet though, but I stopped keeping up once I finally purchased a LCD).

Make sure to read the LCD general info thing found here in the Monitor section on anandtech, it provides great info.

Where did you get 24 vs. 6 bit color from?

You should be able to tell by looking at the contrast ratio and viewing angles.

TN monitors will have lower viewing angles than IPS, and lower contrast ratios and viewing agles than PVA monitors.

Another way to confirm it is if the display colors spec is 16.2 mill colors instead of 16.7. 16.7 million colors doesn't always mean it isn't TN though, because some companies try stupid tricks to raise it.
