I need a new monitor, I have an old HP monitor that's really crap and it's dying, so I need a new monitor

Which should I go with? LCD or CRT? I have a small desk, so I'm hoping for a small LCD.
I will use another CRT if I have to.

I'm looking for a few crystal clear picture. Capable of higher resolutions, atleast 1280x1024 @ a decent refresh rate.

My rig:
AMD64 4000+ SD @ 2.6GHz
2gig G.Skill PC3200 in Dual Channel
MSI Neo4 Plat. nForce Ultra
eVGA 7800GT CO PCI-e 256mb @ 470/1100
Hitachi 160gb IDE for Data
Seagate 160gb SataII 3gb/s for Games

Which should I get, and if which what brand and model?

Thanks.

I'm on a $250-300 budget

don't know what you mean by small, but 99% of the 17" and 19" LCD's are 1280x1024 resolution (screen size about the same as a 18" and 20" CRT would be). Viewsonic VX924 is a great 19" LCD monitor for ~300$ if you look around.

In that case I suggest a CRT, samsung 997 is a good one that can be found for relatively cheap, if you really want an LCD look at the LCD buyers guide xknight put together.

he mentioned the best widescreen monitor for your budget. I agree with him. But i would wait for the 2007fpw with hdcp support so you can watch hd content on vista.

There is only one out there, the 24" Sony FW900. It was discontinued a long time ago, but you can get it off ebay for a bargain price these days if you're willing to buy a used one.

Dude, LCD without question.

I am out on heavy and hot monitors taking up all kinds of space on my desk these days. I would take a bottom of the line 15" LCD over a monster huge 21" CRT any freaking day. The space you gain on the desktop is worth it alone.

Not if you have a big desk.

Although you can't get any of the good CRTs easily anymore, so LCDs are pretty much the only option for brand new monitors.

My desk is HUGE! And I still like the added space ditching my old 19"CRT gave me. I can't see giving back that space, lol.

how about an NEC FE1250+ (21") for $157 (+$40 ship)

in games, I cant STAND ghosting and slow reaction times (it gives me a headache and makes me dizzy) hopefully, SLED's or OLED's will not do that.
Modern LCD's don't ghost.

yes they do, even the 8ms versions do. Just not as much.

I've played with Dells, Sony, and Samsung, and ALL will still ghost, even just moving the mouse (let's not even get into games)

My wife has this one and its great for movies:

I originally bought it for myself, but I had trouble getting the monitor to scale for non-widescreen games. I still sometimes have trouble getting it to scvale to 4:3 aspect ratios, though.

For a standard 19" LCD, I recommend this one. We use BenQ for most of the LCDs at my work, and never had a dead pixel.

Overall, I prefer a standard 19" over the widescreen, but the widescreen is awesome for movies.

No, they don't.

An 8ms rated monitor is capable of 125 frames per second.

If I can't see ghosting on my 16ms rated monitor with my "far above average" vision there is no way you can see it on a 8ms rated monitor.

I'm happy you love that huge, heavy, monitor but don't lie about stuff that is already well documented.

Unfortunately most '8ms' reach 15-18 still. A '2ms' should be ~12ms in reality.

If you have good eyes and can handle a smaller pixel size (I can't) then these monitors are pretty nice, although a little over your budget:

Just a few other options. If you really want to stay within $250-$300 dollars, then you'll need to get a standard 19" LCD - the BenQ I linked to above is very good at $250 after rebate.

I recommend the VX924 but I'm not sure you can eke one out for that cheap (yet). Otherwise the VX724. These two monitors are the fastest on the market, and they fit your price range well. They are 6-bit but 8-bits (with decent response time, still inferior to the 6-bit response time) don't appear until $425 or so. The VX924 actually measures under 10 ms most of the time while the 724 does it under 15 most of the time.

I would definately go for an 8bit panel if you want to reduce the banding / dithering effects LCDs are known for.

If CRTs were readily available I would definately recommend those over LCD, anyone that has seen my FW900 CRT in person would agree as well But unfortunately you're stuck with buying LCD these days if you want a new monitor.
