LCD or Plasma

Hey all,

Currently in the market for a new tv and want to see what you recommend. I have heard of horror stories of Plasma's blowing out after a year and I have heard of dead pixel issues with LCD's. What's the best to buy and where's the best place to buy at?

Check the Black Friday forum and get whichever is cheapest. If you are using an older CRT TV either one will most likely look better to you.

Here are some general differences between the two types.

1. LCDs can have higher potential viewing angles.

2. Plasmas usual have larger sizes, but LCDs are catching up.

3. Plasmas have refresh/response times near on par with CRT.

4. Plasmas can still suffer from burn-in, but mostly from games and such with stationary on-screen displays like health/ammo.

5. Plasmas have better contrast ratios, but usually have glossy screens that cause glare.

6. Plasmas are usually considerably more expensive.


If you are looking for the most bang for your buck, get a LCD.

Let me make this easy for you, Pioneer Kuro. From the 5080 all the way to the 150FD, ALL of them are great. You'll find NO HDTV that's better. If you want the best bang for your buck, I'd recommend the Pioneer 5080. If you want the best, then look no further than the Pioneer 150FD.

Agreed.

The new Elites were named the best flat panel display ever in the last Home Theater magazine. The best part is the technology that makes them so great is used in their entire Kuro line. As an owner, I would recommend the 5010FD. You can probably find it for around $3,000 online.

5080 = perpetual Fap. ....if you can afford it

Have you considered DLP, or do you need to wall-hang?

I've had a Samsung 50" 1080p DLP for over a year now and am still happy with it. Prices on them are -very- reasonable now.

the bolded points are wrong. burn in doesnt happen anymore. i've had a plasma for two years and play xbox on it all the time (football and soccer games) where the scoreboard is alwasy int he same place. never had a problem with burn in. its a thing of the past, been fixed.

You can get the 50" panasonic plasma for like $1500. I've heard those are the best plasmas for the money. Pioneer is probably better, if you don't mind shelling out another $1000.

If you want a quality display then be prepared to pay for it.

2500 bucks for a great plasma is nothing and it's amazing how far the technology has come.

If quality is what you want, you're gonna pay for it no matter what the technology is.

Plasma also has much better viewing angles compared with LCD.

plasmas are cheaper

Burn in DOES still exist, although it is less of a concern than previously. My 42" plasma gets some burn in however I have kept a really close eye on it so nothing permanent. Now that it is broken in I doubt anything would burn in permanent but I still keep a close eye on it.

I prefer LCD. 1 of many reasons is you can get 1080p pretty easy. Plasma most are still 720p.
