Hi all,

The life of my 4 year old 19" monitor is about to come to an end with its popping sound and sudden dimness I'll be looking for LCDs next. What I'm worried of is the sudden drop of LCD prices in the (very) near future since Dell is now going nearly 100% LCDs instead of CRTs. Any thoughts on this?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I read the product cycle for LCD was 6 months. That said I would wait til the next wave of introductions from the major players to see if they'll cut prices of their older models. Wait til sometime this summer. As well there are no indication that the prices would plummet below 50-100 dollars, if that!

Darn, if the product cycle is really 6 months, then I'll have to wait a few more months. Hopefully my monitor won't die by then {g} That said, I'll be glad if LCDs (even 15" ones) will drop to around USD$150-200.

You should probably get another 19" CRt then. $200 will not get you much of an LCD. I don't think you'll find a good quality LCD, even a 15", for $200 for a long time.

I'm actually leaning towards a 17". 19" is just too big for me. I'm scaling down the computer parts in terms of sizes

Prices on LCD's are going to get better as yields get better. I read somewhere that LCD sales are going to surpass CRT's very soon. I can't remember if they said this year or next year. Usually, the longer you wait, the more you'll get for your money down the road.

It'll be good to have the time to wait. But doubt my current CRT can last any longer

I would just do some research now and decide what LCD you want and where you want to buy it. Then hold off till your CRT goes, or failure is imminent in the near future to jump on it. Like techfuzz said, the longer you can hold off, the better stuff/price you will be able to get.

You probably read that in the AT review/interview with Samsung. I recall reading the same thing; very informative read for those that haven't checked it out.

I wouldn't expect any significant price drops in the > 18'' anytime soon, as larger panels will hold a price premium even if yields improve to the point where a price drop would be justified. 19'' CRTs only became the "standard" in the sub-$300 market recently.

If you're looking at a 17'' CRT and space is limited, you may consider getting a 15'' LCD; You're only giving up about an inch (or less) in VIS and it will be considerably smaller. There have been plenty of deals on LCDs for ~$200; just keep an eye out for a BB, CUSA or Sam's/CostCo deal.

That Dell was less than 400 bucks a few weeks ago. It'd be great if it could fall again in the near future, I'm in the market for an 18 myself...

I can't say for sure, all my ordering with Dell has been through our Dell Large Corporate Account rep and we get our pricing based on the quantity when expect to purchase over the course of a year. 9 times out of 10 our prices are below what you see on the website anyways. Ordering from Medium/Large Business may be tough, but as with most companies you can always call and try to haggle yourself one for cheaper than list price.
