LCD questions

Hey

Thinking of replacing a 17" ViewSonic CRT with an LCD. I would have gone with another Sony Trinitron like my workstation but those are, unfortunately, no longer produced. Hell I would have even considered other brands but the only brand available seems to be ViewSonic and I would rather throw my body in a tree shredder before buying one again

I have no clue about LCD displays and basically had a couple questions:

1. Is it true that the pixels don't "die" over time? That they either come dead or not?

2. I've not touched an LCD for a couple years. Back then if you tried to use the non-native resolution on an LCD it looked like complete ass. Is this still the case?

If #2 is still true I'll probably go with the Samsung 712N since all 19" I've seen only do 1280x1024 like the 17"s.

1) Pixels can do both. They can come dead, and indeed still do somewhat often which is why being able to see the LCD you will buy ahead of time is important. They can also "die" over time, usually by things like electrical surges (for instance if you connect the monitor to a computer that is on, or the monitor is on while you connect it)

2)Yes, it is really really much better to run an LCD at native resolution, although you can getg away without that (highly NOT recommended) - have a decent vid card for antything over 1024*786

samsungs are an awesome LCD brand, i like your choice.

I highly highly suggest you read this:

You should try for a DVI monitor (typically any samsung with an N is analog, any with T is both DVI and analog - ex 710T vs 710N)

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately there is no 712T (at least available around here). I've heard that Samsung's analog is great as well.

I'd like to buy one but there are no stores available here in Canada with them that have a decent return policy. A few stores sell it for $100 ($115 with tax) less than the 915N. 915N = $550, L90D+ = $450

BUT if I buy it and it has dead pixels, those are independent stores with restocking fees.

Best Buy and Futureshop allow you no questions asked returns and exchanges :/

The price you pay I guess.
