hi everyone,

i'm building a new rig right now and have bought a full system minus the monitor.

right now i'm using the samsung 213T, which is a 21" LCD running at 1600x1200. The colors are good, but the response time isn't that great - it is overall a great monitor but not the best for gaming.

I want to get a 24" WS LCD, but i'm worried that i won't be able to run many of the games out there (older ones not working due to WS and new ones not working due to 1900x1200 [i've read widescreengaming forums], plus i don't want to have to hack/tweak every ini just to get a game to work)..

i do not need a monitor that doubles as a home theater because i already have a 42" plasma. i just want to use it for work and gaming. I read the LCD buyer's guide thread, and it seems to recommend mainly 19" screens for gaming. any opinions on this? right now i'm looking at the dell 2407 and the samsung 244t or the samsung 940BF (but i don't know if i can deal with going from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024)

======
new rig:
E6600@2.4
evga 680i motherboard
1x evga 8800 gts - 640mb
2x 1gb corsair xms2 memory
corsair 620hx power supply
thermalright ultra 120 heatsink
antec p182
couple of scythe sflex fans
raptor 150GB drive
samsung dvd burner

so i'm hoping it's powerful enough for today and next year's games (if it isn't, i'm hoping that adding another 8800gts will help)..

That is basically the same setup I've got and I have the 24" Dell and I am very satisfied with it. I can play games at their highest settings without many problems at all...and a lot of the newer games coming out all support 1920x1200, so that won't be an issue going forward. Of course if you play older games, you'll need to do some tweaking or just play the game in native 1600x1200. I'd say go with the Dell.

I too have a Dell 2407WFP. With the A04 revision (which is all they ship now) it has built in 1:1 pixel mapping/scaling. This means that for older games that don't support widescreen, you simply play at 1600x1200 with black bars (pillarboxing) on the sides of the image. Since it is displaying the 1200 pixels vertically you lose NO image quality because it is not scaling. The 24in is probably as tall verticall as your 20/21inch (or close).

Also keep in mind with the new 'Games for Windows' Vista branding thing, all games using that branding HAVE to support widescreen properly.

I just got my Dell 2407 wfp last week.
No dead/stuck pixels. Price was right too.

I like it alot. It supports true HD 1080p (1920x1200), so I was able to watch some HD 1080p videos already. Very awesome monitor, banding is not an issue. I have not noticed any ghosting.

As far as widescreen gaming I have had no problems (widescreens are getting pretty common now). if you do have an old game, just scale it the way you like or find a tweak at WSF.

The 8800 GTS is enough for the monitor with all the games, but I do kinda wish I had a GTX now.
