LCD recommendations (gaming)

OK, I'm going to be starting college in the fall and since I am being provided with a free laptop, my parents are going to get me an LCD for my PC (my massive CRT just isn't going to fit). I need some recommendations. I do alot of gaming, mainly CS:S now, though that could change at some point.

Currently, I am using a 6600gt AGP (with DVI), and I was hoping to upgrade to PCI-e at some point, but we will have to see. I want a monitor that will respond well (no ghosting) and have pretty acurate color. Price isn't a major issue, but keep it reasonable.

It seems like man people are recommending the dell LCDs, are those a good choice? Basically, I want a decent LCD monitor, not necessarily huge (17-19 should be fine).

BTW - is there such a thing as a TV/monitor? Something that I culd hook up to the cable jack and switch between? This isn't necessary, I just though it would be a good option since space will be limited and I want to save as much $$$ as possible.

lol... well, I have read wuite a few of the other topics, but I had a few other questions that I never saw answered. everyone either seems to be looking really cheap or high end with different needs. I will search around some more, though...

Any other comments are welcome and appreciated.

The BenQ FP931 (19" w/ DVI) is cheap in price, good for gaming (little to no ghosting) and has an excellent 3yr. full warranty.

I liek that recommendation. A good warraty is an excellent plus. Thanks for the tip and I will check that out. Can anyone testify to the uality of ben-q LCDs? They seem decent in their other products (especially the DVD burner). I will look around.

I have never used the Hyundai L90D+ although most things I have read about it have been very good.
However, as for the claim that it is "the gaming LCD of choice right now" I would respectfully submit that it is getting some very strong competition from the new Samsung 930B.

17" 4ms response LCD is my suggestion.

If you're only worried about using it for gaming then the L90D is probably ok but if you're going to use it ofr anything else the 0.294 mm Pixel Pitch may get on your nerves after a while. Anything .26 and over is noticeable.

Yeah, I may be using it for word processing as well (maybe not, the laptop may suffice). Thanks for all the advice. I will be looking at all the suggestions.

17" is ideal for a monitor. 19" give the same resolution, so there make the spacing between pixels bigger which sucks.

So, for me, it's either 17" or 20".

Dell seems to have won over many people and right now for 17" it's the 1704 FPT. That T at the end is very important. You don't wan to get the FPV which is more expensive, but crappier with 25ms response.

I'm currently using the BENQ FP931, and it is indeed a fine monitor for a great price. I play CSS without problems.

Since you do a lot of gaming and a 17" LCD will work for you, you can get the Samsung 172x. Although the 172x has been out close to two years (it was the gaming LCD when introduced) and there are newer models, it performance and specs still rival many current 17" models and beat most 19" units. Basic specs are:

Response Time: 12ms (really)
Native Resolution: 1,280x1,024
Pixel Pitch: 0.264 mm
Contrast Ratio: 500:1
Brightness: 270 cd/m2
Viewing Angle(H/V): 160/140
Interface: 1 Analog/1 Digital

Mwave has them in stock for $409.00 (I bought one a few months ago to replace my slow (25ms) 172T (also an excellent 17" LCD but too slow for gaming). Not cheap, but great styling, no dead pixels, and great performance as far as "gaming" LCDs' go. Compared to 17" LCDs priced $100 or more less, I still liked the 172x better when I bought it.

Heres a link to Mwave's 172x listing. They've got lots of LCDs, but you have to be wary of manufacturer's claimed response times, especially when the response time is not readily quoted in their specs. BTW, the pixel pitch of the 172x IS .0264mm, NOT .0294mm as Mwave's specs show for the 172x:

I have it too, and really like it. No dead pixels or backlight issues, and it games look great.

Edit - I use a more expensive Samsung 910T at work, and my BenQ at home is just as good (except the screen doesn't pivot).
